Annie Potts’ Young Sheldon Replacement Explains Meemaw’s Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Fate

With some separation from Young Sheldon‘s run, Annie Potts has booked her perfect replacement that is even better than Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. When Connie was first introduced in The Big Bang Theory, the more mellow and reserved version of the character was debuted by June Squibb. Sheldon’s Meemaw was immediately a fan-favorite after that, but it was Potts’ performance as the character that fully endeared her into the public.

Admittedly, Connie wasn’t technically a member of the Cooper family. She wasn’t related by blood to George, but since she lived nearby, she became a staple in the lives of Georgie, Sheldon, and Missy. As Young Sheldon evolved from being a prequel origin for Jim Parsons’ The Big Bang Theory, Meemaw’s role expanded. She started having her own storylines that were not tied to the series’ main family.

Annie Potts Has Secured Best Medicine As Her Proper Young Sheldon Replacement

It’s no secret that canceling Young Sheldon was divisive. While it was the organic ending point for the series based on The Big Bang Theory canon. Sheldon moving to California, which was preceded with the death of George was the catalyst to the finale. However, there was an argument that the show could have gone for a few more years, especially since it could continue with stories about the rest of the family, including Meemaw.

Potts herself was vocal against the cancelation, admitting that she didn’t understand why Young Sheldon had to end when it was still very popular. A year and a half later, the prolific actor has secured her proper TV replacement project with Best Medicine. The Fox comedy follows Josh Charles’ Dr. Martin Best — a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a small fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Potts plays his loving and charming aunt, Joan.

Best Medicine Explains Meemaw’s Absence In Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage

After Young Sheldon, Potts continued to reprise her role as Meemaw in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. While the the spinoff sequel shifted its focus on the McAllisters, Connie played a major role in Georgie and Mandy’s love story, and eventually, Baby Ceecee’s birth. In fact, the couple even decided to name her after Mary’s mother.

That said, the remaining Texas-based Coopers have already appeared in Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage season 2, and yet, Meemaw has yet to make a cameo. While she was name-dropped by her daughter, it’s odd that the writers weren’t able to include her when Mary and Missy returned. Potts’ series regular role in Best Medicine effectively explains that.

Like The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage films in California. Meanwhile, Fox opts to shoot in the East Coast, which makes sense since Best Medicine takes place in the Northeast. This makes it difficult for Potts to be readily available to reprise her role as Meemaw. Even if she wanted to, her schedule needs to line up with Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage‘s production timeline for her to come back, even just for a cameo.
