Sometimes I find it hard to believe that The Sims 4 was released in 2014. Every single time a new pack comes out, I’m reminded of that fact, but the series is still trucking along without a sequel well after a decade in operation. And based on its free and paid update cadence, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
That said, all the packs that have been released to date have added a ton of content and mechanics, many of which are jammed in without rhyme or reason. Thankfully, base game updates often bring everything back in line again, including this recent one that aligned with the Enchanted By Nature expansion.

I oscillate between being a dedicated and lapsed player of Sims 4, but every time I log back in, I’m often overwhelmed. While the game is streamlined enough to make sense of everything eventually, there are a ton of quality of life tools that other simulation games utilize that aren’t provided in Sims 4. The main issue? The avalanche of packs and expansions.

The Sims 4 can get boring and repetitive for the average player. However, there are ways to make the game fun again and no, it’s not from packs.
While it’s up to you to decide which content to piggyback on top of the already massive Sims 4 base game, some expansions add new concepts and items that can clog up your inventory. Every so often, developer Maxis releases a base game update that addresses some of these issues, which naturally extends to the entire game.
July 1’s Free Base Game Update Has Made Inventory Management Much Smoother
Sorting Is King
Thankfully, the July 1 free update has made The Sims 4 much easier to play for many reasons, especially when it comes to inventory management. The “new” sort option was a long time coming, and allows players to easily see new items (complete with a badge) instantly. You can also sort by price, filter, crafted quality, and rarity,” so there are plenty of choices for every discerning player.
Spoiled foods will now be distinguished by a red background, allowing you to easily identify them at a glance. Plus, spoiled foods will be instantly transferred to a new “spoiled stack” instead of taking up room with all of your fresh, ready-to-eat food. As someone who has scrolled through droves of spoiled food in the past, this is probably my favorite change.
The Sims 4 Continues To Improve
There Are More Free Base Game Updates To Come
The Sims 4 still appears to have a lot of life left in it. The creator community is still thriving, and more free base game updates, as well as packs and expansions, are in the pipeline. The fans are also still present and showing up, which has been crucial to the game’s growth and success.

Will we ever see the end of The Sims 4? Maybe one day. Until then, it’ll continue to be a platform of its own, pumping out more experiences and items to interact with. Hopefully, more free base game updates continue to roll out with all that content, to keep everything in check.
