Michael C. Hall Officially Sets First Major Non-Dexter Role In 4 Years After Resurrection Season 2 Renewal

For the first time since 2021, Michael C. Hall will play a major on-screen role other than Dexter Morgan. After portraying the titular serial killer between 2006 and 2013 for the original Dexter series, Hall has played a role in every subsequent franchise entry since its return in 2021 with Dexter: New Blood. After also providing Dexter’s voiceover in the recently canceled Dexter: Original Sin, Hall is returning as Dexter Morgan in Dexter: Resurrection season 2 following season 1’s critical acclaim and record-breaking viewership.

While Showtime and Paramount have guaranteed there’s more Dexter on the way soon, it won’t be Michael C. Hall’s only upcoming acting project. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Hall has now joined the cast of the spy thriller movie Stratagem. However, there are currently no details on which character the actor will be playing in the film.

Michael C. Hall will star in Stratagem opposite Noomi Rapace and Past Lives‘ Teo Yoo. The movie is directed by Michael Idov, and written by the filmmaker and Lily Idov, who previously wrote the German spy series Deutschland 89.

Stratagem tells the story of CIA agent Stella Turner (Rapace), who is assigned to go on an uncover mission to seduce mysterious tech genius Daniel Sim (Yoo) to help prevent a leak of U.S. defense secrets. As she undergoes her mission, the stakes skyrocket as Stella realizes Daniel is manipulating her in return with his own hidden plans.

Production on Stratagem is set to begin in early 2026, though it’s unclear whether this will impact or coincide with Hall’s filming schedule for Dexter: Resurrection season 2, which is also expected to kick off production in mid-2026.

Michael C. Hall Steps Outside The Dexter Franchise Again

Stratagem marks Michael C. Hall’s biggest role in four years outside the Dexter franchise, with his most recent being the 2021 psychological thriller film John and the Hole. In the years leading up to his Dexter Morgan return, Hall also had memorable stints in the 2020 miniseries The Defeated, the 2019 political drama The Report, the 2018 comedy Game Night and Harlan Coben series Safe, and a 2017 cameo in The Crown as John F. Kennedy.

As exciting as it is to continue seeing Hall as Dexter Morgan with Resurrection season 2’s confirmation, it’s equally thrilling to see the actor expand his filmography with new, unique roles. Stratagem‘s spy thriller genre opens up new doors for Michael C. Hall as he gets to showcase his versatility, whether that be as a hero or villain in the upcoming film.
