Playdate Sequel & Franchise Potential Discussed By Director Luke Greenfield

Playdate director Luke Greenfield shares talks of a sequel and a “massive franchise” for Alan Ritchson’s new action movie. Though Playdate just premiered on Prime Video on November 12, there have already been talks of a sequel and potentially a franchise.

In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Grant Hermanns, Greenfield emphasized that his main goal while making Playdate was to create the best possible movie, not to focus on building a franchise right away. He compared it to classics like Lethal Weapon and Beverly Hills Cop, where strong original movies naturally led to successful sequels.

He hints that Playdate could easily expand into a larger franchise because of its strong foundation. Greenfield mentions that Amazon is eager for more, and he and writer Neil Goldman have already started brainstorming ideas for future installments, suggesting that sequels could happen soon. Read his full comments below:

I mean, this is a massive franchise. Everyone knows it. When I go into a movie, I’m just so focused, again, as a writer-director, on making the film great. I don’t really go in usually of like, “Okay, how do I make four of these?” Because you’ve got to have the foundation. When you go to Lethal Weapon, when you go to Beverly Hills Cop, those originals are so fantastic. And then, when you make it just outstanding, the world is like, “Where’s the next one?” Obviously, Amazon is primed to go, and I’ve begun talking to Neil about that. We actually have some very funny ideas for what’s next. I’m sure that’s gonna start happening pretty quick.

Directed by Luke Greenfield (The Girl Next Door, Let’s Be Cops), with a script written by Neil Goldman (Family Guy, Scrubs, Community), Playdate stars Kevin James and Alan Ritchson as two stay-at-home dads who go on a playdate with their sons and end up being pursued by a ruthless team of mercenaries.

In addition to Alan Ritchson and Emmy nominee Kevin James (The King of Queens), the cast also includes Sarah Chalke, two-time Emmy nominee Alan Tudyk (Andor, Con Man), Emmy nominee Stephen Root (Barry), Isla Fisher, Benjamin Pajak, and Banks Pierce.

Though there are already talks of a sequel, Playdate has received mostly negative reviews from critics and debuted to a dismal 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In ScreenRant‘s Playdate review, Gregory Nussen writes, “You can turn down the invitation to hang out with this abysmal Kevin James comedy… regressive and devoid of genuine laughs, the Kevin James/Alan Ritchson action is drowning in dated machismo.”

However, despite the negative reviews, Playdate is primed to be a hit on Prime Video, featuring Alan Ritchson of Reacher fame. That might be all Playdate needs to justify a sequel, and perhaps launch a larger franchise.

Playdate is now streaming on Prime Video.
