Nana Visitor chooses a surprising Star Trek character that she would’ve liked to cross over to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and butt heads with Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). Visitor starred as Major Kira Nerys for all seven seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
In 2024, Nana Visitor wrote Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek. Visitor interviewed many women who have appeared in Star Trek, and she charted the evolution of female characters from their 1960s depiction in Star Trek: The Original Series to their progressive modern roles in Star Trek on Paramount+’s series.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant‘s John Orquiola about her years in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and her upcoming appearance at the ST: CHI – Trek to Chicago convention, Nana Visitor was asked which woman from another Star Trek series she wished could come aboard Deep Space Nine, and her answer was surprising. Check out Nana’s quote below:
ScreenRant: If you had a time machine, and you could pick any of the women from the other Star Trek shows to bring to DS9 and integrate that character and that actor into your show, who do you think would fit in best in your show?
Nana Visitor: I thought you were going to ask me a different question. If I could go back, who I’d want to interview. That would be Grace Lee Whitney. But to bring into the show… I would love to work with Kate Mulgrew. She has the whole Captain command aura and presence about her, and that would be a real upheaval to the show. How would that work out? I see sparks all over the place, and with Captain Sisko. Not sure they’d get along. Those are two alphas. I think that would be really interesting.
Kate Mulgrew, of course, led Star Trek: Voyager for seven seasons as Captain Kathryn Janeway concurrently with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Captain Janeway coming aboard Deep Space Nine is fascinating to contemplate, as Kathryn has a very different command style from Captain Sisko. Nana Visitor is right that they may not get along.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4 integrated Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn), and the Klingon took time to fit into the space station’s dynamic. Captain Janeway would be an even greater outsider than Worf, and her equal rank to Sisko would spark fireworks over who is really in charge.
Star Trek: Voyager’s series premiere, “Caretaker,” began with the USS Voyager docked at Deep Space Nine before becoming stranded in the Delta Quadrant. However, Captain Janeway never set foot on the station. Only Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) and Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) mingled with Quark (Armin Shimerman).
It’s possible that Captain Janeway meeting Captain Sisko happened off-screen during Star Trek: Voyager‘s premiere. However, Nana Visitor’s idea for Janeway to come aboard Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for a stint that’s more than just passing through would be a potentially explosive scenario between two of Star Trek’s greatest Captains.
