Noah Hawley Officially Sets New Video Game Adaptation At FX Just Weeks After Alien: Earth Season 2 Renewal

Two weeks after the renewal of Alien: Earth, Noah Hawley is confirmed to be helming a television series based on the Far Cry video games. Previously, a Far Cry TV adaptation was reportedly in development by Hawley and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob Mac, formerly known as Rob McElhenney.

FX Networks has now announced that the Far Cry television series from Hawley and Mac is officially moving forward. Along with his role behind the scenes, Mac will star in the FX show, which is set to be an anthology that changes the characters, plot, and setting in every season. Hawley and Mac will executive producer the series as well.

The official announcement teases that “madness, chaos and a touch of moral ambiguity await.” As was the case with Alien: Earth season 1, Far Cry will air on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally.

Hawley explained that the creative decision to make the show an anthology would allow it to be faithful to the game franchise. He compared it to Fargo, another FX series he previously worked on, and shared how excited he is to develop the adaptation alongside Mac. Check out Hawley’s statement below:

What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme. To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.

Mac expressed his own enthusiasm about having the opportunity to work with Hawley and being able to adapt a video game universe as “iconic” as Far Cry.

Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.

President of FX Entertainment, Nick Gad, expressed his confidence in Hawley and Mac adapting Far Cry, all while emphasizing their longtime history with the network.

FX has had magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television, and we couldn’t be more excited that they are teaming up for Far Cry. I have no doubt that they will tell this story in a way that is original, gripping and wildly entertaining. We also want to thank our partners at Ubisoft for entrusting us with this beloved property.”

Alongside the news of Alien: Earth being renewed for season 2, it was announced that Hawley signed a new overall deal with Disney Entertainment Television. This involves him developing more series for FX, with Far Cry now being an important addition to his growing slate.

In addition to Alien: Earth and Fargo, Hawley created the hit FX show Legion, along with My Generation and The Unusuals. Mac’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has run for 17 seasons now and is confirmed to be returning for season 18. He also stars in and produces FX’s sports comedy series Welcome to Wrexham alongside Ryan Reynolds.

With many Far Cry games to draw from, Hawley and Mac have ample source material to work with as they develop their new series at FX. Following the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Prime Video’s Fallout, Far Cry now has the potential to be the next hit video game series adapted for television.
