Jujutsu Kaisen Confirms Its New Gojo With a Heartbreaking Easter Egg

It’s been well over two months since Jujutsu Kaisen dropped its new sequel, Modulo, with its own new cast, villains, and story, and it’s safe to say the series is quickly catching on with fans. With Gege Akutami staying on as the writer for the sequel, it’s unsurprising that Modulo has retained many of Jujutsu Kaisen’s narrative quirks.

However, this brings both familiarity as well as a constant sense of unease due to Jujutsu Kaisen’s penchant for tragedy. Unfortunately, with the latest release, it seems like history will indeed repeat itself in Modulo, which already seems to have found its new Gojo.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Teases Its Main Trio Going Separate Ways

In chapter #12 of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, Yuka, Tsurugi, and Maru all go their separate ways, promising to meet the next day and work together with the Rumelians to maintain the wards and borders. Unbeknownst to them at that very moment, the Jujutsu sorcerers and the Rumelians are embroiled in conflict over the killing of a cursed spirit, which was mistaken as a kalyan.

The placement of this scene in the middle of the rising tensions at Makyo Shinjuku feels incredibly ominous, with many fans anxious that the trio might never see each other again. That said, beyond the general gut feeling, the specific directions that Yuka, Tsurugi, and Maru head off into could also be a major hint as to their fate in the series.

Directions Carry Heavy Symbolism in Jujutsu Kaisen

As seen in Jujutsu Kaisen’s finale, directions hold deep meaning in the series, borrowing heavily from Buddhism. Going north, as Gojo stated famously in the airport scene in chapter #236 of Jujutsu Kaisen, is associated with change, enlightenment, rebirth, and becoming a new person, while going south means staying the same.

The finale even saw Yuji urge Sukuna to go north with him, to leave behind his former philosophy centered around strength and aim for one of co-existence. Well, in the latest chapter of Modulo, Tsurugi heads north, hinting at big changes in store for him in the series going forward.

Meanwhile, Maru heads east, which is associated with Bhaisajyaguru, the ruler of the eastern lands of “Pure Lapis Lazuli” and relieving suffering and ailments of this world, or rather, the present life.

This very much echoes Maru and the Rumelians’ true motive behind coming to Earth in the first place, which was simply to find a home free of suffering at the hands of the Deskunte. At the same time, it could also hint at Maru being the only survivor of the trio at the end of it all.

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Hints at Yuko Being Gojo’s Tragic Successor

Most importantly, however, Yuka heads West in the latest chapter, a direction associated with Amitabha and the western lands of “Sukhavati” or the afterlife. This is obviously hinting at Yuka’s imminent death, which makes sense given her terminal diagnosis. If so, Yuka could be approaching a tragic death, much like Gojo, becoming his successor in the most heartbreaking way possible.

If that wasn’t convincing enough already, Jujutsu Kaisen similarly foreshadowed Gojo’s fate in the ending theme for the Hidden Inventory Arc, which also similarly pictured Gojo, Geto, and Shoko heading in different directions.

Gojo, much like Yuka, was also seen heading west, hinting at his death. Meanwhile, Shoko, much like Maru, was pictured headed east, and coincidentally enough, Shoko was the only one out of the trio to survive. Lastly, Geto is seen headed south, staying firm in his beliefs, twisted as they may be, and unchanging unto the very end.

Overall, fans can only hope that Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has different plans for Yuka, but as things stand, her fate does not look too bright. Yuka has been a fairly charming character so far, and while she may not be as popular as Gojo was with fans, her death might just end up being equally tragic.
