After watching Apple TV‘s latest sci-fi hit, it is hard not to see how it could redeem Netflix‘s most controversial cancellation of all time.
Many highly acclaimed and beloved shows rest in Netflix’s graveyard of cancellations. While some of these have already faded from most viewers’ memories, others continue to linger, reminding audiences of how the streaming service pulled the plug on some of its best TV series a little too soon. Belonging to the latter category, a decade-old canceled show still has a massive cult following.
Unfortunately, even though the show is still talked about and audiences still hope for its return, the canceled Netflix series’ revival seems far from likely. If it sees the light of day, however, Apple TV would be its perfect streaming home, especially after its latest sci-fi hit.
After Pluribus, Apple TV Seems Like The Perfect Service For Netflix’s The OA’s Return
Netflix’s The OA, which boasts an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score, was initially planned to have five seasons by its creators, Brit Marling and Zak Batmanglij. Despite having a loyal audience and impressive critical scores, though, The OA was canceled after two seasons. On the surface, Apple TV’s ongoing hit series, Pluribus, has nothing in common with The OA. A closer look at both shows, however, reveals why Apple TV should be The OA‘s next streaming home.
One of the most memorable quotes from The OA is “Lab rats are only powerless because they don’t understand that they’re in an experiment.” This perfectly echoes in Pluribus, where almost all humans on Earth have become lab rats in an experiment after being infected by the happiness virus. The main character, Carol, is immune to the infection and tries to expose the “lab rats” for being unaware of what has happened to them.
To her dismay, the infected remain lost in their state of bliss as they struggle to realize they are trapped in an experiment. Another influential line from The OA that still hits hard is, “It’s not really a measure of mental health to be well-adjusted in a society that’s very sick.” This specifically applies to Carol, who refuses to conform to the new normal but is looked down upon by those who do not realize how sick the society has become after the pandemic.
The OA is relatively more high-concept than Pluribus in the sense that it dabbles with everything from inter-dimensional travel to near-death experiences. However, like the Apple TV sci-fi show, it explores the meaning of captivity, freedom, and humanity. Since Apple TV is being patient with Pluribus and giving it time to find its storytelling footing, it is hard not to believe that the streamer would show the same level of support for a brilliant show like The OA.
6 Years After Its Cancellation, Fans Still Hope The OA Will Return
Even after all these years, The OA remains one of the most talked-about canceled Netflix shows. Many main cast members from the series, including Jason Isaacs, are also still open to the idea of returning for its revival. Unfortunately, even though Isaacs said (via Collider) that they “will find a way to finish that story,” The OA‘s future remains uncertain.
If it ever returns, Apple TV will hopefully make room for it in its incredible sci-fi catalog and give it the much-deserved second chance it could not get on Netflix.
