One Battle After Another Wins Best Feature At Gotham Awards, Boosting Oscars Chances

After winning a major award, One Battle After Another is officially a step closer to winning Best Picture at the Oscars. The newest Paul Thomas Anderson movie is widely regarded as one of the best movies of 2025, making it a prime contender to win the Oscars’ most coveted prize.

Now, at the annual Gotham Awards, One Battle After Another has won Best Feature. The other nominees included Bugonia, East of Wall, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee, and Train Dreams.

While it’s an outstanding achievement in its own right, winning Best Feature at the Gotham Awards also bodes well for the movie’s chance of winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Six of the last 16 Best Picture winners walked away with the Gotham Awards’ Best Feature first.

This includes The Hurt Locker (2009), Birdman (2014), Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), Nomadland (2020), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). One Battle After Another could become the seventh movie to win both major awards and continue what has become an increasingly common trend.

As for who the other Best Picture nominees will be, some will likely be the same as Gotham’s Best Feature, with Hamnet and One Battle After Another as heavy favorites to be nominated. Sinners, Marty Supreme, Sentimental Value, Frankenstein, Wicked: For Good, and Avatar: Fire and Ash are other possible Best Picture nominees who One Battle After Another didn’t face at the Gotham Awards.

Winning Best Picture would be a significant achievement for Anderson, who has never won the award before. There Will Be Blood (2007), Phantom Thread (2017), and Licorice Pizza (2021) all previously received Best Picture nominations before, but none of them won. He received Best Director nominations but no wins for There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, Licorice Pizza, making this another category where One Battle After Another could give him a historic first.

Along with praise for the overall film and Anderson’s stellar direction, many of One Battle After Another‘s reviews celebrated the performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Teyana Taylor. All are considered strong Oscar contenders across the various acting categories, even amid a particularly competitive year.

For Best Picture, Hamnet is widely predicted to win, but it is far from guaranteed, particularly after Chloé Zhao’s film lost to One Battle After Another at the Gotham Awards.
