Percy Jackson and the Olympians returns for season 2 on December 10th, and these are the season 1 details you need to remember. Season 1 of the Disney+ TV show based on Rick Riordan’s book series became a global sensation, which is impressive after the failure of the films.
The show stayed extremely loyal to the beloved novels and only made changes to the Percy Jackson books when they would benefit the story. Luckily, Disney+ didn’t hesitate to pick up Percy Jackson and the Olympians for seasons 2 and 3.
The second season will debut on Disney+ on December 10th with the first two episodes, and then one episode will come out weekly until the finale on January 21. If you’re planning to catch up with our favorite Half-Bloods, here are the season 1 details that you need to remember.
Percy Jackson Is The Half-Blood Son Of Poseidon
At the start of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, the titular 12-year-old boy thinks he’s an ordinary child with ADHD and dyslexia. He believes that his father and mother loved each other, but his father was shipwrecked at sea. Sally makes sure to paint Percy’s father in a positive light.
However, he learns after arriving at Camp Half-Blood that his father is actually Poseidon, god of the sea. Sally Jackson met Poseidon, and they fell in love. However, due to Olympian law, Poseidon had to leave Sally and Percy.
Because he is the son of Poseidon, Percy has heightened strength and durability. What’s more, he has hydrokinesis, can walk on water, and can breathe underwater. Water can also heal his wounds, though it has limited and temporary effects.
The Big Three Gods Made An Agreement Not To Have Any More Children
The reason why Poseidon had to leave Sally and Percy Jackson is that the big three gods – Poseidon, Zeus, and Hades – made a pact not to sire any more children. The children of the big three are far too powerful for the world, and they’ve been the cause of many tragedies, including World War II.
If the children are discovered, they will be killed. What’s more, the gods of the big three attract monsters more than other half-bloods. This is the reason why Sally Jackson married Smelly Gabe. His scent was strong enough to disguise the smell of Percy.
However, Sally also tried to prepare Percy for his future as a half-blood, knowing he would eventually need to know the truth. As such, she taught him Greek mythology, so it would be less jarring when he learned about his father.
Annabeth & Grover Are Percy Jackson’s Quest Buddies
In Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, the titular main character is sent on a quest to find Zeus’s bolt, return it to the god, and prevent an all-out war between the gods. However, he doesn’t go on this journey alone. Annabeth Chase and Grover go along with him, determined to help him succeed.
Grover’s attendance feels obvious since he had spent a long time being Percy’s protector and best friend. However, Annabeth is a little bit different. They didn’t have a relationship before the quest.
In the book, she volunteers to join the quest to prove herself. In a change from the Percy Jackson book, the main character gets to choose his fellow questers, and he asks Annabeth to come with him. His big reason is that the Oracle predicted a friend would betray him, and he couldn’t see Annabeth ever being his friend.
Annabeth Is The Daughter Of Athena
Annabeth Chase is the daughter of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare. This makes her a formidable opponent in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Like all the half-bloods, this gives her powers that align with her godly parent. Annabeth is particularly great in battle, as evidenced by capture the flag. However, she doesn’t have a relationship with Athena.
Besides having good battle and strategy skills, Annabeth’s parentage doesn’t play a large role in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1. However, it will be more relevant in season 2, as Athena appears in The Sea of Monsters, and Andra Day has been cast as Athena in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
Ares Has A Grudge Against Percy Jackson
One of the most significant differences between the Percy Jackson movies and the TV show is the presence of Ares. The movies cut him from the plot. However, in the book and TV show, Ares sends the trio to Waterland to fetch his shield, knowing it was a trap. He also gave Percy a backpack that secretly hit the masterbolt, framing him for the theft.
Ares and Percy also have a battle, in which Percy wins using his hydrokinesis and sword. For all these reasons, Ares has a serious grudge against Percy Jackson, which will undoubtedly come back into play later in the TV show.
Grover Is Going On A Quest To Find Pan
From the start of the Percy Jackson series, Grover dreams of going on a mythic quest to find Pan, the god of the Satyrs. Many satyrs have tried in the past, but none have succeeded. However, he has to get the approval of the satyr council to do so.
Initially, they don’t want to give him a chance since he screwed up his first job as a protector. At the end of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, he gets his questing badge, allowing him to start his journey to find the mythical Pan. Without spoiling the details, this becomes relevant to his story in The Sea of Monsters.
Zeus Transformed His Daughter Thalia Into A Tree That Protects Camp Half-Blood
Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians introduces Thalia, Zeus’s forbidden daughter, without ever showing her onscreen. Luke, Thalia, and Annabeth were once best friends. All three had run away from home, and they leaned on each other to survive. However, monsters came after them because they were attracted to the smell of Thalia, a child of the big three.
However, she nearly died trying to protect Luke and Annabeth. The reason we never see her is that, at the last minute, Thalia was turned into a tree by her father. This tree is what stops monsters from being able to enter Camp Half-Blood.
As in the book, Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will introduce Thalia in physical form, and Tamara Smart will play her. Thalia will have a recurring role in season 2, though it’s not clear in what capacity.
Luke Is The Traitor & He Escapes
The entirety of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 is driven by the fact that someone stole Zeus’s bolt, and Zeus wants to start a war in retaliation. However, the identity of the thief and traitor isn’t revealed until the end of the season. Luke, Percy’s friend and the son of Hermes, is who the prophecy referred to when it mentioned a friend’s betrayal.
He stole the bolt and then convinced Ares that a war between the gods would be good for him, giving him the bolt to frame Percy. He’s doing all this at the behest of Kronos, the father of the gods, who wants to rise up.
Rather than killing Percy, he tried to convince the hero to join their side. When Percy refused, he fled Camp Half-Blood through a portal.
Kronos Has Been Manipulating The Gods The Entire Time
Luke might be the one pulling Ares’ strings, but Kronos, the titan, is the one pulling Luke’s strings. He orchestrated the theft, knowing exactly how his sons would react to the situation. He wanted the war. He wanted the chaos. He wanted the chance to escape Tartarus and rise to power.
Kronos has also been whispering to Percy Jackson in his nightmares. However, he finally comes to him in physical form, via nightmare, in the finale. We see him cloaked in a black, tattered cloth and holding a lamp. Considering he is an overarching villain in the Percy Jackson book series, it’s likely we will see Kronos return in some form in season 2.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2 Will Follow Rick Riordan’s The Sea Of Monsters
The last detail viewers need to remember isn’t so much about the show itself but the source material. Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on Rick Riordan’s books, so anyone who wants spoilers for the show can read them.
The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians followed The Lightning Thief, the second season will follow The Sea of Monsters, and the third season (which has already been renewed by Disney+ and is in production) is expected to follow The Titan’s Curse.
I’ve kept details extremely minimal throughout this article to preserve the surprise, but I can guarantee Percy Jackson is still worth watching if you know the story.
