Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 introduces Tyson, an important character in the overall series. Percy Jackson season 2’s cast has grown since season 1, adding the likes of Timothy Simons and Courtney B. Vance, while making actors like Charlie Bushnell and Dior Goodjohn series regulars.
This turned out to be a good move, with Percy Jackson season 2’s reviews noting how great the performances of its cast are. Of course, this has been noted since Percy Jackson season 1’s ending. In season 2, though, new performers like Daniel Diemer are taking the spotlight. Diemer plays Tyson, a new character who is just as important to the overarching story as he is to Percy.
Tyson Is Percy’s Cyclops Half-Brother In Percy Jackson Season 2
Tyson is first introduced in the opening moments of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 1. He is shown to be a cyclops, a mythical creature with immense strength, fire immunity, mimic abilities, and one eye, whom Sally Jackson took off the streets. Tyson finds himself whisked to Camp Half-Blood alongside Percy and Annabeth, leading to another big reveal about his character.
After helping to defend Camp Half-Blood from giants, Tyson is claimed as the son of Poseidon, making him Percy’s half-brother. In the world of Percy Jackson, it is noted that Poseidon often sired cyclops as children, mostly with ocean spirits as their mothers. This explains why Tyson is a cyclops, yet Percy is a half-mortal demigod, as the latter’s mother was human.
How Tyson Is Different From The Books In Percy Jackson Season 2
Although the basics of Tyson’s character are the same in both the Percy Jackson book series and the Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV show, the latter does make some slight changes. Perhaps the biggest is the reveal of Tyson’s nature as a cyclops. In the show, Percy and Sally know that Tyson is a cyclops immediately.
This marks a change from the book, in which The Mist, the magical veil that separates the human world from the mythical realm, disguises Tyson. Percy only finds out that his friend is a cyclops in the book after several battles with other mythical monsters, prompting Annabeth to tell Percy to look through The Mist and see the truth.
The choice to leave this reveal absent was likely made to speed up the narrative of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, with some of Tyson’s big moments remaining intact. Beyond this, Tyson is fairly similar to how he is presented in the books.
Percy Jackson Season 2 Sets Up Tyson’s Backstory & Character Arc
As all good character-driven stories do, Percy Jackson and the Olympians lays the seeds of Tyson’s backstory and his future character arc. Tyson is shown to be a fairly childlike, timid character who is afraid of monsters and being alone. The reason for this is hinted at in the first two episodes of Percy Jackson season 2.
Tyson tells Percy about a Sphinx who once told him about his mother, as the camera lingers on scratches and scars on the cyclops’ back. This hints at Tyson’s history as a homeless monster, who was targeted by other monsters in the mythological world.
This sets up Tyson’s transition into a less timid, stronger character as Percy Jackson and the Olympians progresses. It would be too spoiler-filled to explore how that happens here, though future seasons of the show will develop Tyson further, after his strong debut in the second season’s opening installments.
