HBO’s DC Shows Teased To End After Netflix Warner Bros. Sale

A new Netflix update teases how DC‘s TV shows might no longer come to HBO and HBO Max after the company’s deal to buy Warner Bros., with DC finding a new home. James Gunn’s DC Universe has bold plans in different mediums. It has been confirmed that actors will play their characters in live-action, animation, and video games.

That includes both animated and live-action DC TV shows, both of which have already been released under Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios as part of the DCU franchise or Elseworlds properties. HBO’s The Penguin became an award winner for DC, while Peacemaker season 2 performed great on HBO Max. However, future DC series might have to be released elsewhere.

At the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference (via Deadline), Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos addressed HBO’s TV show business. According to the executive, “This is a prestige television brand,” with HBO no longer needing to try to become “a general entertainment brandlike it had been doing in Sarandos’ eyes. That role would be fulfilled by Netflix after the deal.

Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters also chimed in on the matter, claiming that the company wants to double down on HBO’s status as a creator of prestige TV shows. As such, Netflix’s view for HBO and HBO Max after the Warner Bros. purchase is clear, with the company wanting to continue making shows like True Detective, The White Lotus, and other prestige originals at HBO.

Netflix Would Likely Become DC’s New TV Show Home & What That Means

The Netflix co-CEOs’ comments also connect to DC, as the franchise would likely fall in line with the notable IPs that Warner Bros. owns, which relate to the “general entertainment brand” comment from Sarandos. As such, Warner projects that revolve around franchises, such as It: Welcome To Derry, the upcoming Harry Potter series, and DC’s Lanterns, would make sense for Netflix, not HBO.

The only franchise I could see 100% staying put at HBO after the Netflix executives’ comments is the Game of Thrones saga. The mothership series is one of the most popular shows of all time, deeply tying the franchise to the HBO name. As such, spinoffs like House of the Dragon, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and future series should remain at their home.

For DC’s series, a move to Netflix would be interesting. The streaming service has a massive global reach, which could boost the viewership numbers of projects all over the DC umbrella. Netflix knows franchises, making popular series out of The Witcher, Bridgerton, One Piece, Wednesday, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and many more. If anything, we might see an uptick in the number of DC shows.
