Deliverance 2 Devs Respond To Game Awards Snubs

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 didn’t have a great time at The Game Awards tonight, and developer Warhorse Studios has taken to social media to comment upon the situation. To be fair, it’s been a while since Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was a true front-runner. While the game represents a high bar for RPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been sweeping awards ceremonies, so it’s been hard to ignore which way the hype winds are blowing.

On X, the official Kingdom Come: Deliverance account shared an image of a dog surrounded by flames, a reference to the classic “This is fine” meme. It’s not hard to imagine that Warhorse developers are currently feeling aligned with the dog’s stoic refusal to acknowledge a rough situation, as Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 has failed to take home any wins tonight.

While the post doesn’t make any specific reference to The Game Awards, the connection seems clear enough.

After Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 ultimately took home the big GOTY prize, the Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 account paid a bit of tongue-in-cheek homage to its rival. Another X post congratulates Expedition 33 on the win, accompanied by a screenshot of a “Blame the French” conversation option from the game.

Warhorse Studios has always been known for its frank style of communication, with a team of developers that’s never been shy about saying what they mean. In this case, it might make the slightly snarky congratulations all the more meaningful, and praise from Warhorse could stand out among the deluge of well-wishes pouring in for the Expedition 33 studio Sandfall Interactive in the wake of The Game Awards.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Is A Deserving RPG

In any other year (well, maybe not when Baldur’s Gate 3 was sweeping in 2023), Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 might have stood a chance at some major The Game Awards wins. The big problem is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, as the two games tend to be nominated in the same fields.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 features more impactful RPG systems, with a living, breathing world that feels like a proper spiritual successor to old-school Bethesda games. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, on the other hand, takes a more JRPG-style approach. Both genres have their fans, but the latter happened to come out on top this time. It would have been nice to see Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 do a little bit better at The Game Awards, but with millions of sales and dedicated fans, there’s nothing to really worry about here.
