The upcoming sequel series Dexter: Resurrection has already avoided making a big mistake in regard to one of Dexter: New Blood‘s most controversial characters. The ending of Dexter: New Blood was one of the most controversial moments in the entire franchise. A large portion of viewers hated it, and now the upcoming sequel Dexter: Resurrection is getting another chance to tell the latest chapters of Dexter Morgan’s (Michael C. Hall) life. The trailer for Dexter: Resurrection also shows that the sequel series will be dealing with the history of the franchise and Dexter’s past mistakes.
It’s easy to think of Dexter: Resurrection as being a sort of “do-over” after the poor ending of Dexter: New Blood, but it’s more of a continuation. Some characters from New Blood, like Harrison Morgan (Jack Alcott) are coming back for Resurrection, and the sequel series picks up right after Dexter was shot in the earlier show. That being said, Resurrection will likely try to avoid some of the mistakes New Blood made, like its frantic pacing at the end and its controversial ketamine/M99 retcon. Luckily, Resurrection isn’t throwing out every divisive character, especially one whose absence would be a big mistake.
Dexter: Resurrection Isn’t Completely Avoiding Angela Bishop After New Blood’s Ending
Batista Was Heard Talking About Angela In The Trailer, So She’ll At Least Be Mentioned In Resurrection
Luckily, Dexter: Resurrection isn’t going to completely ignore Chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) despite how controversial she was in Dexter: New Blood. Angela was a focus of a lot of the criticism New Blood got as one of the worst Dexter shows. Many viewers took issue with the way she approached her police work, the way she turned on Dexter after she found out he was the Bay Harbor Butcher, and more. The trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, however, saw Angel Batista (David Zayas) tell Dexter that he had spoken to Chief Bishop, which means the sequel show won’t be ignoring her entirely.
Trying to write Angela out of Dexter: Resurrection‘s story would have been a big mistake. She was, after all, the first person to piece together that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher and live long enough to expose him. She also let Harrison go free after he shot Dexter at the end of New Blood and presumably took Dexter to the hospital. Angela was far too important to the setup of Dexter: Resurrection to try to ignore her, so it’s good that the sequel show is at least mentioning her by name. She may be divisive, but leaving her out would have hurt Resurrection even more.
Angela Bishop Should Make An Appearance In Dexter: Resurrection
Angela Has Become Too Important To Dexter’s Story & The Bay Harbor Butcher Case To Not Make An Appearance At All
While Dexter: Resurrection will at least mention Angela Bishop, it’s not clear if Julia Jones will actually appear in the show yet. The cast of Resurrection is already chock-full of new and returning characters from the earlier Dexter shows, but Angela hasn’t been confirmed as one of them yet. Despite her controversial reception, Julia Jones’ Angela Bishop should return in Dexter: Resurrection. She was too important to New Blood to relegate her to being mentioned in the third person. Even if some viewers didn’t like her much, the fact remains that Angela is the key to outing Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Dexter: Resurrection is going to bring back another character from the original Dexter series, and it should be a chance to reckon with the past.
Angela will also be important to Resurrection if Dexter isn’t outed as a serial killer. If Batista is skeptical about Angela’s evidence, he’d likely go back to her and interrogate some of her methods. That may even be a chance to change some of the things that made Angela so divisive in the first place. Most of the controversy surrounding Angela was really the fault of some contrivances New Blood took with its plot and outing Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher. Resurrection could easily fix those parts of Angela’s characterization by having her reconsider her assumptions. She deserves a chance to be redeemed in the eyes of Dexter fans.

It also wouldn’t make any sense for Angela to not appear in Dexter: Resurrection. She is the police chief of Iron Lake, but she’s also the only person with any credible evidence that Dexter is a murderer. Batista, at least, will have to talk to her about her evidence, and she’s one of the only people with a personal connection to Harrison. Plus, Angela just deserves to have another chance at catching Dexter after he started a romantic relationship with her and betrayed her. It would be a mistake for Dexter: Resurrection to not let Angela Bishop interact with Dexter at least one last time.
