Warning! Warning! Major spoilers ahead for Omega Kids #3!
The X-Men franchise’s Charles Xavier replacement has reminded readers he’s Marvel’s most hardcore mutant hero. Quentin Quire puts a ruthless spin on the role of “psychic mutant mentor,” making it clear that unlike Professor X, he will not tolerate failure or insubordination. It’s a lesson his “Omega Kids” team just learned the hard way.
Omega Kids #3 is written by Tony Fleecs, with art by Andres Genolet. The finale of the Age of Revelation tie-in series finds Quentin reckoning with the Kids’ betrayal, while preventing them from causing a mass casualty event.
Quentin eventually gets the best of the Kids, but rather than offer them a shot at redemption, he coldly terminates them.
Quentin Quire Is The Anti-Hero Version Of Professor X, A Psychic Mutant Mentor Who Doesn’t Accept Failure
Omega Kids #3, Written by Tony Fleecs; Art By Andres Genolet; Available Now From Marvel Comics
Omega Kids #3 is a race against time for Quentin Quire. After trapping their mentor in an illusion, the Omega Kids set up a psychic “relay,” which, if left active long enough, will kill anyone who has thought anything bad about the despot Revelation. As Rachel Summers puts it in the issue: “That’s everyone.”
The great thing about the issue is how proud Quentin is of his Kids, even as he acts quickly to thwart their plan, and ultimately eliminate them as a threat entirely. Quentin is downright thrilled that his students are working together effectively as a team, even if it is to enact a plan the issue openly describes as genocidal.
Omega Kids #3 achieves a tricky balance. It makes Quentin thoroughly heroic, as he seeks to stop his team from taking “innocent” lives, despite the fact that within the larger context of Age of Revelation, the powerful telepath is very much acting as a villain. This all leads to a final moment that highlights how truly uncompromising Quentin Quire is.
Quentin Quire Proves He’s Too Hardcore To Be A Mutant Teacher By Wiping Out The “Omega Kids”
Age Of Revelation Leans Into Quentin’s Villainous Tendencies
Throughout Omega Kids #3, Quentin is proud of his team, and impressed by their abilities. At one point, he references his own tangled past as an X-Men antagonist, musing about whether the Omega Kids deserve a shot at redemption, like he was given. The very end of the issue teases that he’s going to give the Kids a second chance.
“I’m prepared to show you the same level of understanding and compassion that my teachers showed me,” Quentin says. The terrified Kids breathe sighs of relief, and promise their renewed loyalty to their mentor. Then, in an utterly cold turn, Quentin says, “I’m just playing, we’re done with you,” before obliterating the Omega Kids’ minds completely.
The series ends with Quentin speaking to Revelation, saying, “we’re going to need another batch of Omega Kids.” It’s a jaw-dropping moment that reaffirms Quentin Quire as one of X-Men’s most unequivocally hardcore mutants, while leaving him in a complicated flux state between heroism and villainy that the franchise should continue to explore moving forward.
