The Mighty Nein season 1 has almost come to a close, but just one episode before the finale, the Prime Video series has confirmed what its best attribute truly is. So far, the show has had countless great elements, whether it be the hilarious comedy, heartfelt moments, or entertaining backstories; there has been plenty to appreciate.
Additionally, The Mighty Nein‘s vibrant cast has also ensured the plot remains entertaining, as the variety of personalities means there is always something to enjoy. Between Jester’s outlandish and loud exterior, Molly’s flamboyant nature, and Caleb’s more reserved attitude, there is something for everyone in this squad, showing just how important these individuals are to crafting an engaging narrative.
Thankfully, Trent Ikithon has also been a compelling villain, while Yasha’s introduction in The Mighty Nein episode 5 and Essyk’s complex storyline means there is a lot happening outside the central group. However, it’s the group itself that has carried The Mighty Nein, and episode 7 just confirmed how important their dynamic is to Critical Role’s hit project.
The Mighty Nein’s Group Dynamic Is By Far The Show’s Best Element
Despite the core six members of the Mighty Nein shining on their own, the entire show feels so much better when they are together. Seeing these strangers start at odds before slowly growing to not only enjoy each other’s company but actively rely on one another has been a real treat to witness, as has their core dynamic.
Each character has a fairly distinct role in the team, usually offering motivational, strategic, or combat-oriented advice. Moreover, how they interact with each other has been a huge asset to the show, as we have continued to see unlikely alliances and friendships form that didn’t look possible at the start of the series.
Although Caleb and Nott became friends rather quickly, Caleb and Beau seemed like they’d never get on the same page. However, after The Gentleman’s quest in The Mighty Nein, they have learned to understand each other and share a mutual respect. Likewise, Nott and Jester’s chaotic personalities have meshed well, resulting in constant entertainment whenever they’re on-screen.
Episode 7 even threw Beau and Fjord together briefly, who helped each other realize they belonged with the group, rather than on their own. As fun as it is learning about these characters and their history on an individual level, their chemistry as a unit has been the best part of The Mighty Nein, and there’s still so much more to explore.
The Mighty Nein Is Doubling Down On The Main Characters Being Unable To Function On Their Own
With each passing episode, it has become clearer that these six outcasts work surprisingly well together, but episode 7 doubled down on this by showing they can’t function on their own. When these central characters were first introduced, it’s safe to say no one was really thriving, as they all had their own unique problems.
Caleb was an anxious loner who’d lost his magic, Nott was stealing to survive, Fjord almost died, Molly was desperately trying to keep a suffering carnival afloat, and Beau had been benched from the Cobalt Soul. Jester was the only one who had some sense of happiness, but even she was restricted from truly exploring the outside world.
Despite facing dangerous encounters together, each of their lives arguably improved when they decided to unite, and episode 7 proved they are lost without one another. Everyone quickly found themselves lost and practically hopeless after splitting off, confirming that they need each other to reach their full potential.
As one, they flourish, but apart, they sink, a concept “Belonging” really hammered home. Both The Mighty Nein and The Legend of Vox Machina seem to share this philosophy, and even though the latter has spent much more time developing its characters, the Mighty Nein’s bond already feels extremely powerful, hence why they work so well together.
The Mighty Nein’s Reunion Sets Up An Exciting Future For The Group
After briefly separating, the Mighty Nein are officially back together and more united than ever, setting up a future worth looking forward to. Not only are they taking on their most daring adventure yet in the finale, but it’s hard to imagine they’ll stop there if the original Dungeons and Dragons campaign is anything to go by.
Although The Mighty Nein has a longer runtime than TLOVM, it looks like it will match Critical Role’s other Prime Video show and span multiple seasons. Given that both projects have performed exceptionally well, they will likely get to tell their story in its entirety, meaning the Mighty Nein’s journey is just getting started.
Yasha’s limited screen time indicates that she could have a much bigger role in a second or third season, while there are plenty more villains still to face. Likewise, with the group’s camaraderie continuing to grow, so will their confidence, meaning they won’t shy away from even the most menacing of challenges.
Assuming Prime Video is as invested in The Mighty Nein as it is in The Legend of Vox Machina, these lovable characters have a bright future ahead of them, which indicates the show’s strongest element will continue to shine for years to come, so long as the studio permits it.
