The DC Snyderverse’s revival chances just got the best update they could get in a while, and it all has to do with where things stand between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. DC is bound to be one of the biggest properties involved in the Warner purchase deal, with James Gunn’s DC Universe likely to move full steam ahead no matter what happens.
However, Zack Snyder’s DC movies continue to see a loyal fanbase rally behind them, and given the director’s previously established relationship with Netflix, there is a chance, no matter how small it may be, that the franchise could return in some form once the streamer controls DC’s characters. The next step for that possibility to exist within DC’s slate of projects has been taken.
Netflix Gets Another Major Win Against Paramount For Warner Bros. Discovery
On Tuesday, December 16, a report from Bloomberg detailed how Warner would reject Paramount despite its bigger, hostile offer of $108.4 billion. According to the outlet, Netflix’s deal offers “greater value, certainty, and terms than what Paramount has proposed.” After that report, the situation has escalated this Wednesday, December 17, with Warner formally rejecting Paramount’s bid and explaining why.
In a letter to Warner Bros. stockholders, Netflix addressed the situation, describing the WBD Board’s rejection of Paramount’s hostile offer as a clear message to stockholders. Netflix describes the Paramount bid as “illusory,” with doubts about its financing plan. On that letter, posters for several Netflix and Warner releases could be seen, including one for 2017’s Justice League. Netflix also mentions DC alongside impressive company.
When describing “some of the greatest shows and movies in the world,” the letter includes the DC Universe alongside Warner brands like Game of Thrones and The Big Bang Theory, as well as huge Netflix performers, such as Squid Game and Bridgerton. With Warner formally rejecting Paramount’s new bid, the path for DC’s Snyderverse possible revival is a bit clearer.
DC’s Snyderverse Return Now Hinges On Two Factors
With Paramount seemingly out of the way, two factors stand in the way of the Snyderverse’s return. The first is the fact that the process for Netflix to acquire Warner is a long way from being done. Now, the deal has to go through an extensive regulatory process. According to Netflix’s estimations, it could all be done in 12–18 months.
If all goes smoothly and DC’s characters really fall under Netflix’s purview, then the Snyderverse’s happy ending would hinge on whether Netflix is interested in continuing the franchise on streaming. With Gunn’s DCU moving forward on the big screen, the Snyderverse would no longer occupy that space. Snyder also had recent projects cancelled at Netflix, so a DC future remains questionable.
