Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel Announcement Confirms You’ll Want To Start Saving

A trickle of Cyberpunk 2 news hasn’t produced any concrete information on what to expect from the game – developer CD Projekt Red is preoccupied with releasing The Witcher 4 first – but a recent update makes a potential timeline for its release a little more clear. Formerly known as Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is one of numerous projects underway at CDPR.

In November, CD Projekt Red mentioned in a financial report that its Boston-based studio was rapidly expanding as Cyberpunk 2 development ramps up. When compared to The Witcher 4‘s development process, according to Vice, this indicates that Cyberpunk 2 will “hit its full production in 2027.” With a few years of development following that, it’s more than likely that Cyberpunk 2 will be a next-gen release, coming to the PlayStation 6 and the next iteration of Xbox.

Cyberpunk 2077’s Sequel Is A Next-Gen Game

Even with a very generous, quite unlikely two years in full production, Cyberpunk 2 won’t release until roughly 2029. This is well beyond the predicted next-gen release window, which is expected to be in either 2027 or 2028. Without new hardware officially announced by either PlayStation or Microsoft (both have simply expressed intent to manufacture another console), it’s impossible to say for certain, though.

Rumors have been flying about both. Leaks claim the PS6 will have a handheld peripheral, while many expect Microsoft to abandon traditional console architecture after the disastrous financial performance of the Series X/S, opting instead for something more akin to a pre-built PC. Even if Cyberpunk 2 manages to release on the cusp of console generations, we would hope that CDPR learned from 2077‘s broken last-gen versions and skip a cross-generational release.

The unfortunate reality of looking ahead to the next console generation, though, is that it’s likely to be expensive. RAM prices are astronomical at the moment, affecting the industry at large. The current console generation has also been an outlier with regard to pricing. Five years after its debut, the PS5 has yet to be discounted outside limited sales, and Xbox even raised prices recently.

Issues surrounding affordability only continue to propagate in the United States as the economy becomes increasingly volatile. All these factors are already contributing to stagnated gaming hardware sales, and could potentially grow worse over the next few years as the next-gen consoles close in on release. Whether you get a PlayStation 6 or need to upgrade your PC to play Cyberpunk 2, it’s unfortunately going to be an investment.
