Stephen King’s R-Rated Thriller Remake Of ’80s Action Classic Becomes Major VOD Hit

As Stephen King had one of his novels adapted for the second time on the big screen, the film is now finding new success through VOD.

Following its release on November 14, 2025, The Running Man has become available on VOD, as the King adaptation has become the #4th most purchased film on Prime Video. This is the second live-action iteration of King’s 1982 book, following the film version that came out in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The 2025 incarnation stars Glen Powell as Ben Richards, with The Running Man cast also featuring Josh Brolin as Dan Killian, Colman Domingo as BobbyThompson, Michael Cera as Elton Parrakis, and Lee Pace as Evan McCone. Edgar Wright directed and wrote the R-rated entry.

Produced on a reported budget of $110 million, The Running Man has grossed $69 million at the worldwide box office. Out of its $69 million gross, $37.8 million comes from the U.S., while the remaining $30.7 million came from international ticket sales.

The Running Man’s Rotten Tomatoes score has the film with a 63% rating in the Critics’ Score, based on 280 reviews. However, on the Popcornmeter, the 2025 entry has 78%, with over 2500 verified ratings.

In ScreenRant’s The Running Man movie review, Alex Harrison shared how The Running Man “is still an undeniably fun time at the movies, but even if my enthusiasm for it wins out, my feeling that something was lost in the journey from page to screen lingers.” However, Harrison also stated, “But as much as The Running Man’s infectious energy and thrilling set pieces highlight Wright’s strengths, this story also pushes up against his limitations.”

Outside of The Running Man, King has had a lot of his work brought to the screen throughout 2025, including the return of the IT franchise, but this time through HBO, with the IT: Welcome to Derry prequel series. The Long Walk was also tackled for the big screen by Francis Lawrence.
