Disney+ may not be the most popular streaming platform, but it’s impossible to claim that it doesn’t put out some incredibly strong shows, including one ridiculously popular fantasy hit. Netflix has occupied the seat of the number one streaming platform since it popularized the concept of streaming.
But Disney is putting up some serious competition thanks to its strong brand loyalty and decades of content that it can fall back on to pad out the catalog. However, streamers need to have new shows in order to stay relevant, and Disney+ has been putting a lot of work into doing just that with some hits and some misses along the way.
What Is Agatha All Along About?
One show that was an astounding success, however, was Agatha All Along. A series that serves as a sequel/spin-off from WandaVision, which is also a part of the larger MCU. Rather than continue Wanda Maximoff’s story after the character died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, this show followed her rival, Agatha Harkness.
Agatha is an evil witch who uses her powers selfishly and frequently betrays people around her. This made this series fascinating as she was required to team up with several witches to travel a mysterious road and obtain the things that each needed most.
How Agatha All Along Ties Into The Larger MCU
The character of Agatha Harkness has existed for decades in the comics, initially appearing as a supporting character in The Fantastic Four stories, where she was a nanny for Reed and Sue’s children. In the MCU, Agatha is a deeply complex character, and the show uncovered her past, while also reintroducing Wanda’s children, who were thought to have disappeared after WandaVision.
By the end of the series, characters like Agatha and Billy Maximoff are firmly reinserted in the MCU and ready to reappear at a later date as part of a larger story, potentially as soon as in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars.
Why Agatha All Along Was So Successful
It’s extremely common for shows that exist as part of a larger IP to start with some excitement and high viewing numbers, and taper off as the season goes on. However, Agatha All Along defied all expectations and saw the reverse happen, with a significant increase in viewership throughout the show’s run.
The reality is, many people did not expect much from this series, which focused on a side character in a dying universe. But the performance of Kathryn Hahn, combined with the compelling narrative and the stunning visuals, made this a series that far exceeded expectations.
This caused a stir with the show becoming viral online as memes were made about each episode, and audiences discussed the story in detail. All of this combined to make Agatha All Along one of Disney+’s most successful shows.
