The first-ever adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk finally secures a streaming release date. The dystopian thriller was written under the author’s pen name, Richard Bachman, with the story revolving around a group of boys competing in a deadly competition until one survives.
Nearly four months since its release, Starz will stream The Long Walk, starting on January 10, 2026. Until then, audiences can still purchase or rent the King thriller on video-on-demand.
Even though The Long Walk was the first novel written by King, it would take nearly five decades until the story was adapted to the big screen. During that time, there were many failed attempts, with directors like George A. Romero and Frank Darabont involved at some point. The challenge came down to executing the story’s slow pacing and monotonous narration.
Eventually, Hunger Games franchise director Francis Lawrence helmed the project and was able to finally materialize the story in a feature film. His efforts proved successful, with the critics and audiences praising the King adaptation for depicting a tragic story about brotherhood in a dystopian world.
Cast members like Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson were lauded for their chemistry, showcasing the depths of their friendship in light of the eventual tragedy. In what was a stacked year of King adaptations, The Long Walk turned out to be one of the best-reviewed movies. It currently has an 88% score, alongside a high 84% audience score.
In addition, the thriller was one of the two King movies to become a box office success. With a budget of $20 million, the film ultimately made $63.1 million globally.
The remaining The Long Walk cast includes Beng Wang, Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, and Tut Nyuot. Jt Mollner wrote the screenplay, while Lionsgate distributed the movie.
