A key Wicked: For Good deleted scene has been released. The second movie adapting the beloved Broadway musical came to theaters on November 21 and has gone on to gross nearly $500 million worldwide.
Now, ahead of For Good being available to rent or watch at home as of December 31, Entertainment Tonight has debuted a deleted scene featuring Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), Glinda (Ariana Grande-Butera), Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Boq (Ethan Slater), and Nessarose (Marissa Bode). Check it out below:
The scene is a new flashback montage the characters’ time as students at Wicked‘s Shiz University. The five friends are seen laughing as they race away from the school and into the country for a picnic while the tune of “Dancing Through Life” plays in the background.
This includes the much-hyped deleted moment of Fiyero and Boq being shirtless as the two characters chop wood. Beyond Glinda and Nessarose being delighted by what they see, Boq chopping wood foreshadows his fate of becoming the Tin Man.
The group proceeds to play badminton, with Fiyero and Boq and Elphaba and Glinda giving each other chest bumps as they get into the game. They then read and relax while sitting on a blanket, and Elphaba gives Glinda the black boots that she wears due to Kiamo Ko during Wicked: For Good‘s ending.
While there are brief flashbacks to the time Elphaba, Glinda, Fiyero, Boq, and Nessarose spent together at Shiz in For Good, the deleted scene would have built on that with an extended sequence and provided more context for the group’s friendship, as the five characters are rarely seen all together. It also would have added more meaning to details like Glinda’s black boots and made some of the characters’ fates more tragic.
Many of the comments express disappointment that the scene was cut because of this lost context and what it would have added to the characters’ relationships. However, the decision was likely made due to pacing concerns and a tonal difference from the rest of the movie.
The upbeat tone is a stark contrast from the darker approach to the second half of the story, especially next to Wicked: For Good songs like “No Good Deed” and “March of the Witch Hunters.” The latter would have been especially jarring given the difference between the cheerful Boq in the deleted scene and the vengeful Tin Man who rallies Oz’s citizens to hunt down Elphaba.
Even though fans didn’t get to see the scene in theaters, they are now able to watch it at home, along with the rest of Wicked: For Good.
