The showrunner for House of the Dragon shares HBO’s first reactions to the upcoming third season, as well as revealing that they have made significant progress on writing the fourth. House of the Dragon season 3 is expected sometime in 2026, likely in late summer, following the critically acclaimed first two installments from the Game of Thrones prequel, based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
The show’s co-creator, Ryan Condal, recently said on The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of, the podcast, that the team is making “great progress” on the confirmed fourth season of House of the Dragon: “And then writing the next season, which we began in earnest a couple months ago. So, we’re making great progress on all fronts.” In the meantime, they have started sending season 3 episodes to the network.
“We’ve actually started turning episodes over to the network so they can see the first drafts of things,” says Condal, “and they are very happy which is always nice to hear.” The next installment should arrive about two years after season 2 wrapped up in August 2024. House of the Dragon season 2’s ending is a massive cliffhanger, which promises that all the biggest battles are about to start.
House of the Dragon chronicles the Targaryen dynasty around two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, when House Targaryen still had many living, strong dragons. After the death of his first wife, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) names his daughter Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock/Emma D’Arcy) heir to the Iron Throne, which is contested by many of the realm’s noblemen.
Viserys is pressured into remarrying, and following his death, a civil war ensues between Rhaenyra and her brother Aegon’s (Tom Glynn-Carney) forces over the succession. House of the Dragon has been nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series Primetime Emmy, and won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, which its landmark predecessor never even did.
While fans wait for the next season of House of the Dragon, HBO will also debut its second Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set about 100 years before the flagship. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for season 2, as the network continues to grow the franchise, rebounding from Game of Thrones’ widely disliked final season.
Condal previously said that they are planning on House of the Dragon ending with season 4, as this is the time they need to cover the events of this era of the Targaryens, as recounted in Fire & Blood. Even though it will be the end, fans should be happy to hear that the team believes their show is as strong as ever, and the finale will be delivered in a reasonable timeframe.
