Andor is one of the best Star Wars projects of all time, and is rightfully getting its praise, but showrunner Tony Gilroy thinks fans should also be watching another Star Wars TV show. Andor was special because it was very boots-on-the-ground and focused on the everyday people of the Rebel Alliance, not the Jedi.
In fact, Andor became the first and only Star Wars show not to feature a lightsaber. This focus on the “little” guy helped ground the show and made it feel more relatable. While everyone dreamed of growing up to be Luke Skywalker, Andor reminded us that regular people can be just as important to a cause, like fighting the Empire.
Though Andor connected well to other Star Wars titles, it wasn’t overly concerned with the “lore” of the greater Star Wars galaxy. It fit in where it needed to, but there was no need to continue building on stories that audiences already knew and had heard. There were no gratuitous cameos, and the only fan service came in the form of good storytelling.
There’s one show, however, that Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy thinks fans should also watch, and it may be surprising.
Tony Gilroy Loves Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
Probably For The Same Reason Fans Love Andor
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was a fun adventure that brought back the magic of the galaxy while still telling a compelling story about coming of age and finding one’s place in the galaxy.
In a recent issue of Empire Magazine, Tony Gilroy stated that he liked Skeleton Crew because “I like how committed it is to its tone, and it seems really well done.”
Gilroy’s position on Skeleton Crew shouldn’t be surprising. Similar to Andor, Skeleton Crew sticks with one tone throughout. It’s worth noting that these two shows are very different in terms of their tone, but they are both consistent, making for cohesive storytelling. Additionally, both shows focus on their characters and their development.
Skeleton Crew Is Nothing Like Andor… & That’s What Makes It Great
It Is Its Own Thing
Star Wars is far-reaching when it comes to the types of storytelling that are possible, and Skeleton Crew being tonally different from Andor shows that. These two stories take place in the same galaxy, but are totally different.
Skeleton Crew told a narrow story that wasn’t overly concerned or weighed down by the burden of Star Wars lore, just like Andor.
It’s easy to see why Tony Gilroy enjoys a story like Skeleton Crew. The show, created by Spider-Man director Jon Watts, is committed to its own style and bright aesthetic. Skeleton Crew told a narrow story that wasn’t overly concerned or weighed down by the burden of Star Wars lore, just like Andor.
Both Tony Gilroy and Jon Watts set out to tell a particular story that just so happened to exist within the Star Wars universe. While other shows have been so focused on connecting to other Star Wars titles, Skeleton Crew didn’t need to, because the story didn’t call for it.
Though Skeleton Crew is tonally different, fans of the form of Andor will definitely appreciate the storytelling and commitment to aesthetics, just like Tony Gilroy does.
