Ethan Hawke will return in FX and Hulu’s crime thriller series The Lowdown. Premiering in September 2025, the comedy-drama series The Lowdown was a major streaming hit and maintains an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%. The Western-noir drama follows a bookseller who moonlights as an investigative journalist, who endangers himself and his family as he uncovers corruption in Tulsa.
Now, FX has confirmed that The Lowdown is renewed for season 2. The Lowdown is created by Sterlin Harjo and also stars Keith David, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Kyle MacLachlan. Production on season 2 is scheduled to begin in Tulsa this spring, following being named one of the “Top 10 Shows of 2025” by many publications, including The A.V. Club, The Hollywood Reporter, and The New York Times.
SlashFilm says of The Lowdown that “Hawke is at the top of his game,” an especially noteworthy comment considering his accomplishments this past year. While The Lowdown aired from September to November, Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon released theatrically on October 24, starring Hawke as songwriter Lorenz Hart in a widely acclaimed performance.
Hawke is now nominated at the 2026 Golden Globes in the Best Male Actor, Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category for his turn in Blue Moon. 2025 also saw the release of She Dances featuring Hawke, as well as his return as “Grabber” in Black Phone 2, the latter becoming a hit Blumhouse horror movie sequel with a worldwide gross of $132.2 million on $30 million budget.
