Ethan Hawke‘s polarizing remake of a classic Western movie is quietly climbing Netflix’s global streaming charts 10 years after its release. Hawke has enjoyed a number of successful projects as of late, from Black Phone 2 being a critical hit, to the recent renewal of his underrated FX series The Lowdown. But not all of his projects are remembered fondly.
Such is the case with 2016’s The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the classic 1960 Western movie of the same name. The movie follows a group of gunfighters protecting a small town. Hawke portrayed one of the Seven, former Confederate soldier Goodnight Robicheaux. It earned mixed reviews from critics, scoring a 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, FlixPatrol reports that The Magnificent Seven has become a quiet success on Netflix, 10 years after its theatrical release. The Western remake is sitting at Number 7 worldwide on the platform as of January 19, 2026. While the series hasn’t made it to Number 1 anywhere, it’s Number 2 in the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, and Martinique.
The 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven is not available on Netflix in the United States. Instead, it’s on MGM+, meaning the success of the movie on Netflix is entirely because of its placement in international countries. The film’s global success goes against the critical reception it received, emphasizing how people outside the US are enjoying the movie.
When the Western movie came out in 2016, it was also met with lukewarm audience reception. The movie currently holds a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while it managed a 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb based on over 243,000 reviews. However, it managed to make somewhat of a profit at the box office, earning $162.4 million against a $90-107 million budget.
The movie also includes plenty of familiar Hollywood stars, being one of Chris Pratt’s roles between Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Other members of the Seven include Denzel Washington, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier. Other core characters were played by Peter Sarsgaard, Luke Grimes, and Matt Bomer.
Because of these familiar faces, coupled with plenty of action and ease of access via Netflix, it’s no surprise The Magnificent Seven has seen a resurgence around the world. The Western may not have been perfect, and definitely not one of Hawke‘s best works, but it’s had an impact that will likely continue to emphasize the importance of the streamer’s worldwide success stories.
