The Dark Souls franchise is going to make an unexpected return this February, and it’s a fan-made event to keep the series alive while FromSoftware doesn’t issue a new sequel. Since its release, FromSoft’s first souls game, Demon Souls, revolutionized action RPGs as we know them – so much so that “soulslike” is considered a genre to many. There haven’t been any signs of an upcoming Dark Souls 4, for example, so fans are returning to what they know.
As was shared by user wfmctr on Reddit, fans of the series are planning a return to Drangleic, the setting for Dark Souls 2. This is mostly a call-to-arms from a Dark Souls 2 fan to others, incentivizing them to play the title, originally released in 2014, once again. The post encourages players to create a brand-new character from scratch and tackle the adventure, “engaging in as much jolly cooperation as possible.”
Dark Souls 2 Is Back This Year
The Fan-Held Event Encourages A Return To Drangleic
The fan-held “event” is set to occur between February 27 and March 13 this year. It’s worth noting that this isn’t an official event of any sort, but an attempt to gather fans of the second entry in the series, hopefully reliving the marvels it has to offer while, potentially, helping new players. Dark Souls 2 feels different from any other installment in the franchise, so many of those who tackled the first game may have felt repelled by it.
Amidst what can be called an increased difficulty compared to other titles in the gaming series praised by Brandon Sanderson, the “jolly cooperation” encouraged by the event may be a way of helping each other get through some of the tougher challenges posed by the game. If you’ve ever had trouble progressing through Dark Souls 2, regardless of the platform on which you play it, the aforementioned period may be the best, as veterans are seemingly making a comeback.
The Fans Are Keeping The Game Alive
Dark Souls 2 Is The Least Beloved Of The Series
Even if Dark Souls 2 is still the least beloved entry in the series, this post and the many responses to it prove that the game is still very much alive, over 11 years since its original release. Surely, the game isn’t getting new updates anymore, but fans are keen on keeping the online community alive, pushing each other to move through Drangleic and experiment with the different classes in Dark Souls 2.
It may be a while before we see a new title from the franchise, as FromSoftware is still working on the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. Furthermore, there are also years-long rumors about a new Bloodborne, and given the success of Elden Ring, possibly a new entry in the most recent series, in addition to Armored Core. Even so, Dark Souls is still one of its strongest franchises, and fans aren’t ready to abandon it – not even its least beloved title – just yet.
