The new trailer for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 reveals that an OG character will return after breaking his multi-season appearance streak. As the longest-running live-action sitcom in TV history, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will continue its record-setting streak with its upcoming seventeenth season, which is set to premiere on July 9, 2025, on FXX. The entire main original cast of It’s Always Sunny – including Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito – is set to return for season 17 and beyond, with season 18 already confirmed to be released sometime next year.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 will feature a second crossover with another acclaimed sitcom, Abbot Elementary, after “The Gang” appeared in season 4, episode 9 of the Emmy-winning ABC series, in January 2025. The second Abbot Elementary crossover episode will be the season premiere of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17. The new It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 trailer confirms that “The Gang” will have another crossover with one of ABC’s flagship reality competition dating shows, The Golden Bachelor, in which Frank looks for his perfect (or not so perfect) match.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 17’s Trailer Confirms Cricket’s Return
Cricket Will Return After Being Notably Absent From Season 15
Original series character Rickey Cricket, played by Daniel Hornsby, will return in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 after being absent from season 15. Cricket did return for one episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, episode 3 “The Gang Gets Cursed,” but broke his longstanding streak by not being a part of season 15, released in December 2021. Cricket made his series debut in season 2, episode 7, “The Gang Exploits a Miracle,” and has been featured in every single season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia since, except season 15.

“The R-Rated Version”: Part 2 Of Abbott Elementary & It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Crossover Previewed By Chris Perfetti
Part 2 of the Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny crossover episode is airing next month, and this is what Chris Perfetti had to say about it.
Cricket is shown briefly in the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 trailer, but appears to be in a pretty bad way. Still homeless, dirty, and donning blonde dreadlocks, Cricket appears to be talking to Rob McElhenney’s Mac but does not look particularly excited to see him. Cricket still has a damaged left eye, which was the result of a fight with a dog from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 8, episode 1, “Pop-Pop: The Final Solution.” It’s unknown at the time of writing how involved Cricket will be in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 or if he will match or beat his season-high appearance total of three episodes.
Cricket Has Been In Every Season Since His Debut Except It’s Always Sunny Season 15
Hornsby Is A Writer On It’s Always Sunny With 43 Episode Credits
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans may not realize that David Hornsby has a much more significant role in the acclaimed comedy series than playing Cricket alone. After McElhenney, Howerton, and Day, Hornsby has written or co-written the highest number of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episodes, with a total of 43. Hornsby was the story editor for the entire third season. He is responsible for writing iconic It’s Always Sunny episodes such as season 4, episode 8, “Paddy’s Pub: The Worst Bar in Philadelphia”, season 5, episode 10, “The D.E.N.N.I.S. System.”, and season 9, episode 3, “The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award.”

Charlie’s Fate In The Abbott Elementary & It’s Always Sunny Crossover Episode Could Not Be More Perfect
The Abbott Elementary & It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia crossover had some ridiculous rivalries, but Charlie got a surprisingly uplifting subplot.
Although Cricket doesn’t appear in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 15, Hornsby wrote two of the episodes: “The Gang Buys a Roller Rink” and “Dee Sinks in a Bog.” Hornsby also appears in and writes for Day and McElhenney’s Apple TV series Mythic Quest. One key factor as to why Cricket wasn’t featured in season 15 was that it was the first season of It’s Always Sunny that reduced its total runtime from 10 to eight episodes. Fortunately, the series-long theme of Cricket becoming more and more decrepit as the series goes on will continue in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17.
