Supernatural Cast Shares What Their Perfect Revival Would Look Like – And It’s Basically Just The Boys

The cast for Supernatural has an idea about what their perfect revival would look like, and it basically would be The Boys. It’s been six years since Supernatural came to a close with season 15, and already, people are talking reboots. Reboots and revivals are all the rage in the streaming era, and they have been long before it.

Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins, who play Sam Winchester, Dean Winchester, and Castiel, respectively, have been asked about a reboot frequently. Eric Kripke, the current showrunner for The Boys, was the original creator of Supernatural, and his involvement could look much different these days.

Sitting down with TVInsider, the cast of Supernatural discussed what they thought a Supernatural reboot would look like, and it might look familiar to some Amazon Prime subscribers.

If Supernatural were to come back, what kind of format would you want it to be? A feature? A limited series?

Padalecki: We’re all a lot older than we were 20 years ago. I don’t know if I have 22 episodes of Supernatural in me. I think a limited series would be great.

Would you want it to get grittier, or would you want to keep the same tone?

Ackles: I’ve thought about this because we’ve been asked what would the show have looked like had it been on a streamer. And it would’ve been different. It would’ve been a little more R-rated. But part of me feels like, because of what we did for so long and what the tone is, I feel like changing that now might be doing it a disservice. I could see the benefit in keeping it like a broadcast show.

Padalecki: I like the rules that broadcast television put on us because we still played.

Ackles: And we pushed the envelope.

Padalecki: We pushed the envelope so much within those boundaries. There’s an art to that.

Collins: I asked [series creator] Eric Kripke, “If you ever did a reboot of Supernatural, what do you think it would be?” And he said he would want it to be as horrifying as possible.

Padalecki: Big surprise.

Ackles: He’s doing that. It’s called The Boys!

What This Interview Means For A Supernatural Reboot

If Kripke Is Involved In A Reboot, It’s Going To Be Violent

Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins have continued on to successful careers post-Supernatural, but it has been 20 years since the show premiered, and each of these actors is much older than they were. Filming 20+ episode seasons a year is OK when you’re young, but a bit tougher when you have other obligations.

The Boys Confirms Key Detail About Its Supernatural Reunion As Jared Padalecki Addresses His Season 5 Casting

After announcing a Supernatural reunion in The Boys season 5, featuring Ackles, Collins, and Padalecki, the Prime Video hit confirms a key detail.

Their comments about the show being grittier if it were on a streamer reference how streaming offers a lot more leeway in terms of what you can depict on screen, compared to something like a network show. It appears that the Supernatural team enjoyed the parameters of network TV, however.

When Collins asked Kripke what his vision of a supernatural reboot would be, Kripke told him that he would want the series to be as “horrifying” as possible. A horrifying TV show with superpowered beings is basically The Boys, which Kripke is doing right now, so mission accomplished in that regard.

Our Take On A Grittier Version Of Supernatural

Kripke Could Make An Intense Version Of The Show If Given The Runway

A version of Supernatural that looks more like The Boys would be an interesting prospect. Supernatural has plenty of ferocious monsters, super-strong characters, and beings capable of much more than the normal human. The kills in that version of Supernatural could be even worse than the deaths in The Boys.

There would be ample room in a grittier Supernatural for someone with Kripke’s mind for violence and mayhem to have fun in. Supernatural already has some horror undertones; Kripke could crank those up even more. However, Padalecki may have the right idea when it comes to a reboot.

Sometimes a show needs parameters to succeed. A lot of great TV and movies have been made because the showrunners had to work within a specific framework. When you have every option available to you, like in The Boys, you can get lost. Supernatural works best when toning down the more extreme parts of its story.
