Joker’s Potential Mass Effect 5 Return Gets Mixed Response From Seth Green

While speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Seth Green shared an update on his potential involvement with Mass Effect 5. Green previously played Joker in the original Mass Effect trilogy, but details are scarce about the story and setting of the next game, so it’s unclear what characters will be returning. We know at least one character is coming back, but according to Green, we will likely have to wait a bit longer to learn about Joker’s fate.

The topic of Seth Green’s potential Mass Effect return came up during an exclusive interview with Screen Rant. Green made it clear that, while he still has a lot of love for the role of Joker, there are currently no plans to bring him back. However, he did leave the door open for his return, saying that he would be willing to explore the character further if given the opportunity. Green’s full comments can be seen below:

“There’s no plans for that currently. I really love that role, and it’s one of the coolest and more significant things that I’ve actually gotten to be a part of. I got offered a bunch of different games, and it’s hard work. You wind up doing, like, 10s of hours of recording over a year of time. And you can hear it, man, my voice, I suffer. But I wanted to do that game, because it was the first game that was going to carry reputation throughout the game, and through the entirety of their series.

And I like the idea of establishing a character, being able to establish a character that other characters would react to based on what they had done. So, that seemed like a massive, huge thing, and then obviously, it went on to be such a significant beacon to all the misfits and weirdos that felt like they couldn’t have a squad. I had to acknowledge the fact that I’ve had an incredibly long and intimate experience with 1000s of people I’ve never met. So, I love that role, and I love that game, and I really love getting to meet people who have gone on that ride. So, if there was more story to tell for that character, I’d be open to exploring it. But I also feel wholly satisfied with what I was able to contribute, how I was able to participate.”

Seth Green’s Role In Mass Effect

Seth Green Played Normandy Pilot Joker In The Original Trilogy

In the original Mass Effect trilogy, Green’s character Joker was the skilled pilot of the Normandy. Joker shared some of Green’s signature wit, and could be cocky at times, though this could have been an effort to prove himself. Joker has Vrolik syndrome, sometimes called brittle bone disease, which made many in his life question if he’d be able to join the Alliance Navy.

EDI’s actions across the Mass Effect trilogy may indicate that this helpful AI wasn’t as good-natured as she often seemed.

Although Joker starts off as a smaller character in the first Mass Effect game, his role grows more prominent in the second two installments. As one of the few characters who was a consistent member of Shepherd’s crew, Joker’s presence is a comforting and familiar one throughout the trilogy. It’s hard to imagine returning to the Normandy without him, though it’s still unclear if that’s the plan for Mass Effect 5, or if the game will focus on new characters.

What We Know About Mass Effect 5

We Only Have A Short Teaser For Mass Effect 5

As of now, we’ve only gotten a short teaser for Mass Effect 5, which doesn’t give too much away. In it, we see Liara T’Soni finding the wreckage of the Normandy. However, this is far from confirmation that any of the other characters from the original games will return. After all, Liara is an Asari who can live for millennia, so this could be taking place a long time after Shepherd’s defeat of the Reapers.

The Mass Effect franchise is full of dramatic moments, but there are just as many hilarious scenes that make its world fun to explore.

I’m of two minds when it comes to what I’d like to see from Mass Effect 5. I wouldn’t mind Shepherd and the crew being alive, though I would prefer we play as a new character, even if that’s the case. Still, it would be nice to get some familiar faces alongside Liara, including Joker and other Normandy crew members. As Seth Green’s comments don’t completely discount the idea of Joker’s return, I’m hopeful there is still a possibility that we’ll see more of the character in the next game.
