The 2020s, especially this year, have been a great time for Stephen King adaptations. Until recently, many of the most classic King-based films were pre-21st century. This includes horror films like The Shining and Carrie, as well as non-horror favorites like The Green Mile and Stand by Me.
The most recent King adaptation fell into this latter category. This was The Life of Chuck, which, like a Stand by Me or Shawshank Redemption, was not a horror film. While it did not do well at the box office, The Life of Chuck was critically acclaimed, boasting an 81% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.
One of these positive reviews came from ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki. She gave the movie 8 out of 10 stars and said that it was “elevated by an excellent cast.”
The year of King adaptations still has a lot of exciting things in store. This includes Francis Lawrence’s adaptation of The Long Walk and Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man. Another of this year’s already-released King adaptations, however, has just gotten a streaming release date.

It Will Stream On Hulu
The Monkey has just gotten a streaming release date. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film is an adaptation of King’s short story of the same name. It tells the story of a pair of twin brothers who find an old toy in their attic, which becomes linked to a series of gruesome and traumatic events.
The Monkey received strong reviews, amassing a 77% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. This included a 6 out of 10-star review from ScreenRant‘s Abdulbaki, who appreciated the “off-the-wall humor.” Some people leaned more positively on the film, saying it was one of the better King horror adaptations in years.
Per Hulu, The Monkey‘s streaming release date has now been revealed. The film is coming to the platform on August 7. This comes a few months after The Monkey was available to purchase on digital platforms starting on April 4.

This Could Become A Streaming Hit
Unlike The Life of Chuck, The Monkey has already done well at the box office. The film made $68.8 million worldwide during its run. This is sizable for a horror film, especially one with a reported budget of around $10 million.
For this reason, The Monkey has name recognition as it goes onto its streaming service. This means that the film is more likely to become a streaming hit, as people are more likely to either want to watch it again or will have heard of it due to its successful theatrical run. As August 7 approaches, it will be interesting to see if the film ever tops the Hulu charts.
