As it kicks off, Guy spots James near his home with Jinny and helps her see that they have to leave Italy. However, they don’t realize that James has already kidnapped Freddy, so Guy and Jinny head back to England to seek their friends’ help in finding him.
Before long, James has his hands on Jinny, too, using her desperation to find her son against her and luring her out of hiding. Honoria and Richard team up to rescue Jinny and Freddy, and, while they are successful, Richard doesn’t make it home, as he’s shot and killed by James while protecting the others.
Episode 6 Finally Sees Everyone Reunited & The Buccaneers Is Better For It
However, It Highlights How Much Some Dynamics Have Been Missed This Season
Almost from the start of the episode, everyone rallies around Jinny and Guy as they come together to help find Freddy. There’s a lot to enjoy about those aspects of the episode. With everyone pitching in, there are satisfying hero moments for Nan, Honoria, and, of course, Richard. Nan and Honoria have both really come into their own in The Buccaneers season 2, and their actions in this episode are the perfect example. Nan’s shown a real maturity this season, and it’s nice to see Honoria with a big moment on her own.
Most importantly, though, Jinny’s return to England allows her to reunite with Nan and their friends. While those scenes are more than welcome, they also highlight how important those friendships are to The Buccaneers and how much they’ve been missed this season so far. Similarly, it’s refreshing to see Guy and Theo back together again, but it proves how much the show needs that dynamic to feel like itself.

It Puts Things In Perspective For The Characters (& Us As Viewers)
The reunion between Guy and Theo, where what could be an awkward moment turns into an opportunity for gratitude instead, is a great example of how this episode grounds the season. It puts the romantic drama in perspective and reminds us as viewers that the characters care a lot about each other, even when their actions may suggest otherwise. When push comes to shove, they will come together and take care of each other, and it’s nice to be reminded of that.

In a far less pleasant way, the show is also grounded through James’ treatment of Jinny and the way he so easily manipulates the public against her. This season has taken an admirably unflinching approach to what it was like to be a woman during this time period, while finding parallels to modern times. It’s deeply upsetting to watch Jinny’s righteous anger turned against her by James, partly because it’s so familiar to any woman who fears being labeled “too emotional” only for expressing feelings.

While a storyline where a man kidnaps his son, imprisons his wife, and kills his own brother wouldn’t be out of place in many TV dramas, it takes The Buccaneers too far beyond its original tone. While the first season had darker moments, nearly always courtesy of James, at its heart, it was a fun, frothy story about female friendship and falling in love.
Richard’s death is absolutely brutal, from the suddenness of it to how it unfolds, and it takes down The Buccaneers’ most reliable romance with it.

In a season already wanting for levity, Conchita and Richard were a welcome balm to some of the heavier moments, and the show really benefited from having at least one stable couple for the girls to aspire to. Without that, it’s hard to imagine the show feeling the same going forward.
