Wolverine's mother calls him an animal.

One of Wolverine’s most tragic and pivotal moments occurred in Wolverine: The Origin #3, where Logan’s mother threw him out, calling him a monster after he murdered his family’s groundskeeper (and his secret biological father), and taking her own life soon after. With his mother’s unexpected return, there was a spark of hope that he could receive closure.

The idea that Logan’s mother was alive seemed too good to be true, and now Marvel has revealed that it was.

However, the reveal that Wolverine’s mother was an illusion has quickly turned this bittersweet reunion into a new nightmare for the hero that is sure to change Logan forever. Not only does the reveal pull at fans’ heartstrings, but the revelation that Wolverine’s mother was, in truth, Mastermind using his powers of illusion is an ingeniously sickening twist. Wolverine will now do anything for one of the X-Men franchise’s most despicable villains.

The fact that Wolverine could smell his mother made it incredibly convincing that she had returned, but Mastermind’s psychic powers allow him to manipulate others into believing they can smell, touch, and hear things that do not actually exist. The idea that Logan’s mother was alive seemed too good to be true, and now Marvel has revealed that it was.

Logan Faces His Most Heartbreaking Moment To Date

In Wolverine #10, Logan admitted that smelling his mother has made him weak and afraid, bringing him back to his tormented childhood. Wolverine is one of the X-Men’s toughest heroes, but the return of his mother has rendered him extremely vulnerable, effectively revealing his greatest weakness and opening the door for Sabretooth and other villains to exploit him. Mastermind can make Wolverine see anything he wants, and there’s no telling who Logan will be willing to attack if he believes they’re a threat to his mom.

Dangling Wolverine’s mother in front of him only to rip her away aligns with the sick methods Sabretooth uses to torture Wolverine, and is a horrifying use of Mastermind’s powers, elevating Mastermind into an A-Tier villain. The return of Wolverine’s mother was unexpected, but the eventual reveal of the truth will undoubtedly destroy Wolverine in a character-redefining way.
