The developer of Battlestar Galactica’s 2004 reboot, Ronald D. Moore, has confirmed that he’s done with the franchise for good. Moore turned the sci-fi show originated by Glen A. Larson in 1978 into one of the 21st century’s most popular and acclaimed TV series, before ending it in 2009, after four seasons, a miniseries, and two small-screen movies.
Now, the writer and producer has revealed that he believes his involvement with the franchise is definitely over. Despite working on the Battlestar Galactica spinoff series Caprica after he’d brought the main show to an end, Moore doesn’t expect to return to it again.
Speaking to ScreenRant’s Joe Deckelmeier about writing another Battlestar Galactica reboot at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 24, Moore seemed to have made up his mind. When asked about the possibility of being involved in such a reboot, he responded as follows:
“Under my vision? I think so. I’ve actually had conversations through the years with the powers that be at Universal, who are great people and obviously love the show and are very proud of it. And I’ve always been tempted because there’s a part of me that’s like, “Oh, that’d be great. [I could] write some vipers again and do that?” And then I wake up the next day and I go, “What, are you crazy? It’s just asking for failure.” I’m very proud of the work we did. And it was time to leave them wanting more, walk off the stage, and just say thank you.”
Moore’s Answer Appears To Be Final, But Another Revival Could Happen Without Him
Although Moore has previously expressed regret about how Battlestar Galactica ended, his latest confirmation about not working on another reboot is consistent with the stance he’s always taken on this question. As controversial as Battlestar Galactica’s series finale may have been, its legacy has remained intact, which is why Moore feels that its story is best left alone.
Without his involvement, it’s hard to see a Battlestar Galactica series that bears any resemblance to the 2004 version being produced in the near future. Sci-fi reboots are very much in vogue, however, and it’s very possible that NBCUniversal launches a revival spinoff of some sort regardless of Moore’s stance, since they own the IP for the franchise.
Our Take On Ronald D. Moore Being Done With Battlestar Galactica
It’s An Honorable Stance That Protects The Show’s Legacy
If anything, Moore’s stance on another Battlestar Galactica reboot should be a breath of fresh air for sci-fi fans who are all too used to seeing the legacy of great franchises ruined with frivolous reboots. The way back for Battlestar Galactica’s 2004 cast and characters is fraught with peril.

A theory about Battlestar Galactica ties into some of the big twists of the reboot and could make it a direct prequel to the original series.
It’s to be hoped that no one attempts to revive the series without Moore, endangering the show developer’s four-season masterpiece in the process. Any future Battlestar Galactica spinoffs should tread carefully, treating the franchise’s greatest series with the reverence it deserves.
