Warning! This article contains spoilers for The Buccaneers season 2, episode 7.After one of The Buccaneers’ most shocking episodes yet, the show bounces back with episode 7. Weeks after Richard’s tragic death, his family and friends prepare to honor him at a memorial event. Conchita pours all of her energy into Minnie, which makes her friends worry she hasn’t processed his passing.
Meanwhile, Nan heads home to New York, where her parents’ divorce trial is just beginning. There, she supports her mother, Patti, while also reuniting with her birth mom and Patti’s sister, Nell, though the circumstances are far from ideal.
The Time Jump & Location Change Come At The Perfect Time
It’s A Relief That Part Of The Episode Is Set In New York
The Buccaneers makes one of its smartest decisions of the season by forgoing the immediate aftermath of Richard’s passing and instead picking up six weeks later. Episode 6 was arguably The Buccaneers‘ darkest ever, and the show is smart not to linger there, instead focusing on the more interesting part of the grieving process for Conchita and the others, after the initial shock has passed.
The only real downside to the time jump is that we see no real consequences for James on screen. Nan tells Patti that he’s in jail, but there’s no real moment of catharsis for Jinny, which is a shame.

Setting part of the episode in New York is another smart move. It’s a welcome distraction from Richard’s death, and, similar to the Italy scenes earlier in the season, it’s a breath of fresh air visually.
The Divorce Scenes Are Hard To Watch At Times But Realistic
It’s Great To Have Leighton Meester & Christina Hendricks Back
The New York scenes cover a lot of ground, including Patti’s divorce trial and Nan confronting Nell about her parentage. Luckily, it’s all handled well, and there’s plenty of time for smaller beats despite the large amount of plot.
After being a highlight of the start of The Buccaneers season 2, it’s nice to see Patti and Nell again, though their presence does highlight how much Patti, especially, has been missed in some episodes. When Patti asks Nan how Jinny and Conchita are, it’s hard not to think about how strange it is that she never came over to England with everything happening, though the show does attempt to rectify that by having her join Nan and Guy on their trip back.
It’s also really wonderful to see Nan so self-assured in many of the scenes – the more mature hair and clothes she’s gravitated toward this season stand out in the conversations with her parents, especially, where it feels like she’s talking to them as an adult rather than their kid.
There’s a nastiness to the court scenes that I wasn’t necessarily expecting, but it jives with The Buccaneers’ commitment to realism when it comes to how women were treated back then. It’s also really wonderful to see Nan so self-assured in many of the scenes – the more mature hair and clothes she’s gravitated toward this season stand out in the conversations with her parents, especially, where it feels like she’s talking to them as an adult rather than their kid.
The show also uses the New York scenes for a smart bit of levity and romance, with Guy making the trip over. The staircase callback is very fun, and, after Nan has spent most of the season taking care of others, it’s lovely to see Guy show up for her in this way.
Conchita’s Response To Richard’s Death Is Surprising – But In A Way That Works Well
The Buccaneers Takes An Unexpected Route
Coming off last week’s episode, I assumed Conchita would be understandably bitter and devastated over Richard’s passing. Instead, the show deviates from that and finds her more in a place of being grateful for having loved him. There’s a big moment of frustration at the memorial, but for the most part, Conchita’s more focused on Minnie and even some of the others than she is herself.
It’s a response that actually makes a lot of sense for the character, who has always been one to roll with the punches. It’s also lovely to see Conchita step into a caretaker role with Jinny and especially Honoria, who she makes it clear are her sisters, despite everything that’s happened.
The pep talk she gives Honoria leads to one of my favorite scenes of the season, where she shocks her mother by kissing Mabel in front of her. Coupled with Lizzy, Jinny, and Conchita’s joyous reactions, it’s a welcome moment of romance, similar to what Guy and Nan get in New York.
I still have my reservations about what Richard’s death will do to the show long-term, but I was pleasantly surprised by how The Buccaneers handled the aftermath.
