Will It Happen? Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2.The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2’s ending wrapped up some major storylines, but it clearly left the door open for plenty more action, creating questions about whether a third season will happen or not. After Maggie refused to kill Negan in The Walking Dead spinoff, season 2’s finale indicated that they would work together going forward. While we’ve seen the two fail to put their differences aside in the past, it seems like Maggie is truly ready to move on from her grudge against Negan, as forgiving her husband’s killer is the only way she’ll ever find peace.

Although the duo’s team-up could have been a healthy place to close the spinoff, there is still far too much unfinished business in Manhattan. Alongside the main protagonists still being in the city, Hershel’s story with the Dama still has a lot to offer, while New Babylon’s presence on the island means there is also a major villain group to defeat. Additionally, Dead City‘s fast zombie tease and lingering mysteries only make a third season feel that much more inevitable, but despite how likely it seems, there is still some uncertainty over whether the show will be renewed.

Is The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Happening?

A Third Season Has Yet To Be Officially Confirmed

While Dead City season 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed, another installment looks certain to happen. The story remains incomplete after season 2, and it seems like another outing was always intended, suggesting it’s only a matter of time before the show’s continuation is confirmed. Considering The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon was renewed for season 3, there is no reason the same can’t happen with Dead City, especially as the spinoff remains popular. No official updates on the series’ status have been provided yet, but rumors about season 3 being in pre-production have emerged, furthering its chances of being greenlit.

When Could The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Release?

2027 Feels Like A Realistic Arrival Date For Season 3

Assuming season 3 does happen, it feels likely that the show could arrive sometime in 2027. The Walking Dead has maintained a pretty good turnover rate throughout its history, with the main show getting yearly releases, alongside recent spinoffs like Daryl Dixon. However, there was a two-year wait between seasons 1 and 2 of Dead City, making 2027 a safe bet. Given Jeffrey Dean Morgan has balanced The Walking Dead with Invincible, The Boys, and other major projects in the last few years, his busy schedule is surely a major reason behind a longer production cycle for Dead City.

It’s not completely out of the question that Dead City returns to our screens next year, but based on the spinoff’s history, the summer of 2027 seems to be the most likely date for season 3.

The franchise’s success with producing annual content suggests that assembling the cast is tricky, but if the rumors are true about the show already being in pre-production, there’s a good chance filming dates are currently being worked on. What The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3’s Story Could Be

The Plot Will Presumably Focus On Maggie & Negan Working Together To Take Down New Babylon

After season 2’s conclusion, Dead City season 3 already seems to have a concrete plot in place. With New Babylon taking over Manhattan, Maggie, Negan, Perlie, and anyone else resisting their rule will surely be looking for a way to stop them. The villainous group already forced their laws onto Maggie’s community outside the island, and letting them have full control of Manhattan would make New Babylon one of The Walking Dead‘s most powerful villain groups. Additionally, the Dama and Hershel will be looking to try and regain power, making their involvement a slight wildcard.

A Missing Walking Dead Character Finally Returns After 12 Episodes, But There’s A Big Catch

A crucial Walking Dead character finally had their first proper appearance in Dead City, but their return to the franchise wasn’t quite as it seemed.

While Maggie and Negan have no affection for the Dama, they will be reluctant to interfere too heavily with her plans since Hershel is working alongside her. Maggie and Negan’s relationship will also be a major focal point once again, as they look to work past their problems despite Negan still grieving the loss of Ginny. Both central characters will ultimately be hoping to leave the island with their families while stopping New Babylon, with characters like the Dama and the Croat offering an element of unpredictability to Dead City season 3’s story.

Who Would Be In The Walking Dead: Dead City’s Season 3 Cast?

Dead City Season 3 Already Has Plenty Of Familiar Faces Who Seem Destined To Return

Dead City season 3 already has some major characters that look destined to return to season 3. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be the first names cast for the project, as Maggie and Negan are by far the most crucial characters involved in the spinoff. Their complicated relationship has been a pivotal part of the plot, and given they’re both franchise veterans, the show can’t function without them. Additionally, Gaius Charles has been set up for another central role in Dead City‘s return after season 2’s ending, having already played Perlie for the last two seasons.

Although he has been frequently involved throughout the show, he ended season 2 side-by-side with the protagonists, meaning he could be given an even bigger spotlight. Logan Kim will surely reprise his role as Hershel if another installment happens, and with Lisa Emery’s the Dama becoming a major part of Dead City season 2’s cast, she is also destined to return. Other characters like Charlie Byrd, Benjamin Pierce, and the Croat could potentially play big roles as well in the rumored third season, and the spinoff will undoubtedly bring in some new faces to keep the action exciting.
