Fans of Gundam and Helldivers 2 should check out a free-to-play (F2P) game called Mecha Break. The mech shooter title developed by Amazing Seasun Games was announced back in 2023 and entered a beta period earlier this year, but has since been released. You can play the game on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with cross-save and cross-play between the platforms.
One of the most notable July video game releases, Mecha Break is also planned to arrive on PlayStation 5 consoles later this year, but a specific date hasn’t been provided just yet. In the game, you control different types of Gundam-like mechs from a third-person perspective and fight alongside allies against other players or in PvE combat scenarios.
Mecha Break Is Free And Out Of Beta
The Game Has Cosmetic Microtransactions
Mecha Break is completely F2P, and you aren’t required to spend anything on it to have access to game modes or progress further. This was one of the very first releases in July, and it’s officially out of the beta period, meaning it’s been polished and optimized for the platforms on which it’s available.
It is worth noting that Mecha Break does have microtransactions, but these are applied to customization options for both the mech’s pilot and the mechs themselves. Apart from skins and other cosmetics that don’t influence gameplay, however, the game can be enjoyed for free without any extra costs.
There Are PvP & PvE Modes
One of the best free games on Steam, Mecha Break has several different game modes depending on the type of approach you like to shooters. There are two PvP modes: Operation VERGE and Ace Arena. The former puts you into a 6v6 battle against other players in tactical missions, while the latter is a 3v3 deathmatch mode.
Mecha Break also has an extraction-based game mode called Operation STORM. In many ways, it resembles Helldivers 2’s extraction mode. Operation STORM sets you and up to two more allies to search different hotspots and face enemies for the prospect of supplies, which then need to be extracted.
The game isn’t perfect, as exemplified by its Mixed reviews on Steam. Even so, a lot of the negative reviews stem from criticisms toward its aforementioned monetization system with cosmetics. Furthermore, Mecha Break had AI-voiced dialogue, though that has allegedly been changed for a full cast of human actors, something that was promised to Screen Rant in 2024.
If you want to play something that is adjacent to Helldivers 2, but with Gundam-like mechs, this is the game for you. The F2P element is also compelling, as you can gather your friends to fight enemies in giant robots in Mecha Break.
