NYC's radio shutdowns

Two of New York City’s most popular hip-hop morning shows have been shut down: Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, and The Block’s Miss Jones and Ed Lover.

Major changes are coming to New York City’s morning hip-hop radio offerings. Hot 97 has cancelled Ebro in the Morning, while 94.7 The Block has removed radio personalities Miss Jones and Ed Lover from the station’s website.

The Hot 97 co-hosts—Ebro Darden, Laura Stylez, and Peter Rosenberg—took to social media to post cryptic messages hinting at the end of their show. Finally, the hosts posted more emotional goodbyes once the news was confirmed.

“We had the best time… the most beautiful listeners and got to work with legends I love,” wrote Stylez on Instagram. “I’m so proud of the work we did together… I lived so many of my dreams at Hot 97 and got to work with my best friends! …and best friends don’t let go… trust me, [Ebro, Peter] and I have plans and more coming next year!”

“Almost 19 years later it comes to a close… longest tenured morning host ever at the station,” Rosenberg said on Instagram. “Because friends with my heroes. The future is very exciting, but I’m filled with gratitude for the past. [Ebro] plucked me out of obscurity in DC and put this mic in my hand.”

The reason behind the cancellation is unclear, but Darden claimed it has to do with his outspoken political views, such as remarks against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Meanwhile, Hot 97 owner MediaCo confirmed to Radio Ink that Funkmaster Flex will be moving into Ebro’s former morning slot.

Drake, who has often been the subject of criticism on Ebro in the Morning, left a hatchet emoji under an Instagram comments section covering the news of the cancellation. The hosts took to the former Twitter to call out Champagne Papi’s conduct. “Drake is ‘right-wing’ and so is [AK],” wrote Darden.

But Rosenberg had a bit more to say: “It’s behavior like this that has made it impossible for people to defend the whack shit that he does,” he wrote. “But happy Hanukkah, my one-time pal… I truly wish you well, even if you’re celebrating what you believe is our demise. (Spoiler alert—we’re about to be much bigger now that we won’t be held back by a company that is and has been completely lost ever since they bought the station!)”

As for Miss Jones and Ed Lover over at 94.7 The Block, it’s unclear what the future holds for the radio personalities or the station. The two DJs were removed from the station’s website, but no official announcement has been made as of press time.
