Spotify announces AI-powered Prompted Playlists for Premium subscribers in the US and Canada after an initial test run in New Zealand.

On Thursday, Spotify announced the beta rollout of its new AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature for Premium subscribers in the United States and Canada. The company first tested the feature in New Zealand last month, building on an earlier AI playlist feature launched in 2024. Now, users can request what they want to hear in much more detail compared to the earlier version.

For example, Spotify says users can start with a broad request like, “mood-boosting indie-pop for getting ready to go out with friends including songs recently featured on hit competition and reality shows that fit my taste, along with songs I love but haven’t played this year.” Or, start with a scenario like, “warm acoustic songs for a slow Sunday morning, plus hidden gems and covers from singer-songwriters trending globally right now.”

Spotify will then generate a playlist using “real-time information about the world of music, including trends, charts, culture, and history,” which also factors in your “entire listening history from when you first joined Spotify.” The company says this means that “each playlist reflects not only what you love today, but the full arc of your taste.”

Prompts can also be edited at any time, and users can choose to refresh their playlists on a daily or weekly basis. Premium users in the U.S. and Canada who have access to the feature—which Spotify says will finish rolling out across the region by the end of the month—can try it now:

  1. Open Spotify and tap Create, then select Prompted Playlist
  2. Describe what you want to hear, from a specific vibe, scenario, or cultural moment
  3. Spotify will generate a playlist from the prompt, which you can optionally select to refresh daily or weekly

“We hear from listeners all the time that they love playlists, but making their own can feel daunting. Our editors spend a lot of time thoughtfully curating playlists, and that level of intention can be hard to replicate when you’re starting from scratch,” said Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial. “Prompted Playlist offers a more intuitive entry point, letting users begin with moods, moments, or ideas in their own words, and build something that feels personal.”

Spotify says Prompted Playlists provide the “next evolution” of its earlier AI playlist feature, and are more tuned into real-time music trends and culture, while providing deeper control.
