Kannada star Dhruva Sarja booked for allegedly cheating producer, FIR filed against him over...

The long-standing feud between Kannada actor Dhruva Sarja and producer-director Raghavendra Hegde has now reached the courts, with a formal complaint filed at Mumbai’s Amboli Police Station. The dispute, which has been simmering for nearly a decade, stems from allegations that Dhruva failed to fulfil his commitments despite taking a massive advance for a film.

As per a Cinema Express report, Hegde has accused the actor of taking a ₹3 crore advance payment for a planned movie but never proceeding. The genesis of the problem goes back to 2016, just after Hegde’s debut film Jaggu Dada, featuring Darshan, reached theaters. Basking in that success, Hegde started talks with Dhruva for a fresh project called The Soldier.

What is the entire matter?

Hegde asserts they were in constant touch regarding the script from 2016 to 2018. During this time, Dhruva supposedly asked for ₹3 crore in advance, before a formal agreement, asserting the amount would be used for purchasing a flat. To raise this substantial amount, Hegde alleges he borrowed a high-rate loan of ₹3.15 crore and deposited the money in RH Entertainment, which is purportedly owned by Dhruva. The agreement was that the actor would sign up for the film.

A formal pact was finally signed on 21 February 2019. Apart from the advance, Hegde reports having spent an additional ₹28 lakh on scripting and publicity work. However, he complains that Dhruva subsequently distanced himself completely from the project, putting the filmmaker in the lurch.

The initial grievances were lodged with the Karnataka Film Chamber, but the stalemate prevailed. As there was no solution in the offing, Hegde approached Mumbai officials, and a formal FIR was registered by the Amboli Police. This legal turn of events has once again placed the controversy in the public domain, making it one of Kannada cinema’s most high-profile behind-the-scenes scandals. With the case now formally in the legal arena, the industry will keenly await to find out how this high-profile fight ends.
