Anupamaa’s Rupali Ganguli WELCOMES SC’s revised order on stray dogs: ‘A big win…’
Rupali Ganguly had strongly criticized the Supreme Court’s earlier decision to relocate all community dogs from Delhi-NCR to shelter homes, calling it utterly cruel and inhumane.
Actor Rupali Ganguly, best known for her role in Anupamaa, has expressed her gratitude after the Supreme Court revised its earlier order regarding stray dogs in Delhi. On Friday, the court announced that all stray dogs in the national capital would be sterilised and then released back to their original locations instead of being permanently shifted to shelters.
What did Rupali Ganguly say about SC’s revised decision?
Taking to her X handle, Rupali called the decision a big win. She wrote, “A big win for compassion! Grateful to the Hon’ble Supreme Court for modifying its order, allowing sterilisation & release of stray dogs in Delhi. This step not only safeguards people from rabies & overpopulation risks but also lets our voiceless companions live with dignity. True progress is when compassion & safety walk hand in hand.”
Earlier, the actress had strongly opposed the court’s previous directive, which ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR be captured within eight weeks and kept in shelter homes permanently. She had voiced her disappointment, saying that moving dogs away from their territories was not an act of kindness but rather a form of exile.
In her heartfelt note, Rupali reminded people about the importance of dogs. “In our traditions, dogs guard Bhairav Baba’s temple and are fed on Amavasya for blessings. They’ve grown up on our streets, guarding shops, waiting outside our doors, barking away thieves. If we remove them now, we risk losing our protectors before the real dangers arrive, like silencing an alarm before a fire,” she wrote.
She further added that stray dogs are not outsiders but part of our faith, culture, and safety net. She urged people to care for them through sterilisation, vaccination, and food rather than displacing them.
What was the Supreme Court’s decision on stray dogs?
The Supreme Court had initially passed the order while hearing a case about the increasing number of dog bite incidents in Delhi-NCR. The bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan had directed civic authorities to set up special shelters and warned that obstructing officials could lead to contempt of court. The court had also ordered the creation of a helpline to report dog bite cases.
