The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on Thursday issued a warning to comedian and actor Kapil Sharma. The warning was issued due to the repeated use of the terms ‘Bombay’ and ‘Bambai, ‘ instead of Mumbai, on his famous show The Great Indian Kapil Show. The comedian was threatened with strong agitation against him if he didn’t stop these actions. Ameya Khopkar, the woman who heads the MNS film wing, recently addressed the issue and asked the Mumbai reporters to deliver the warning.
According to ANI, Ameya Khopkar said, “The name of this city is Mumbai. On Kapil’s show, for a long time, we have seen that the city is always referred to as Bombay or Bambai. We oppose this. It’s not an objection; it’s anger. The name of this city is Mumbai. If you can address other cities by their proper names like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, why insult our city?”
They even addressed Kapil’s connection to the city. Khopkar said, “You have been working in Mumbai for so many years… Mumbai has been your karmabhoomi. The people of Mumbai like you and watch your shows. Mumbai is in our hearts; don’t insult this city, don’t insult the people of Mumbai… I am warning Kapil Sharma.”
They further asked the comedian to take the right steps and do better. “I request you that if this has happened by mistake, then correct the mistake… Whoever comes on your show, whether they are celebrities or the anchor, tell them first that they must not call Mumbai ‘ Bombay’ or ‘Bambai.’ If this does not happen, then the MNS will launch a strong agitation.”
When they were questioned whether this move was politically motivated ahead of the local bodies ‘ elections, the claims were dismissed, stating, “We have been agitating on this issue for the past many years. Keep elections aside; the name of this city is Mumbai. You will have to say Mumbai. And those who do not call it so will have to face our anger,” he said.
To further support their claims and make a point, they shared a video clip from the show, where actors and siblings Huma Qureshi and Saqib Saleem, in the shared clip, can be seen narrating a story of their move from Delhi to Mumbai, in which they are seen referring to Mumbai as ‘Bombay.’

Along with the video, Khopkar also wrote on his X in Marathi that even when the city was officially renamed 30 years ago, the old terms are still very commonly used in Bollywood, TV shows, and films. He reminded everyone that Mumbai was officially recognised by the Maharashtra government in 1995, even before cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata adopted their official names.
