Beijing police have detained three women for spreading false rumors on social media regarding the death of renowned Chinese actor Yu Menglong. The 37 years old actor Yu Menglong died on September 11, 2025 after falling from a residential building in Beijing. After his death, various speculations and conspiracy theories have been going viral on social media.
What did the police investigation say about Yu Menglong’s death?
Many people, instead of treating it as a normal accident, attributed it to a larger conspiracy. To quell the rumors, the actor’s management team released a statement from his mother on September 16th. In this statement, the mother clearly stated that Yu Menglong accidentally fell from a height after drinking alcohol. The police also completed their investigation and informed the family of the same information. Subsequently, on September 21st, the Chaoyang branch of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau clarified the cause of death on its official Weibo account, stating that it was an accident and not a criminal conspiracy.
What is the Yu Menglong death controversy?
But meanwhile, some people on social media began making false claims to create sensation and increase their following. According to the police notice, the first woman arrested is 40-year-old Zheng. She wrote on an online forum that “Yu was lured by an important person, forced to drink alcohol, and then assaulted and forced to commit suicide.” The second woman, 29-year-old Yuan, spread false news on various platforms that “Yu was hung from a high-rise building, his nails were pulled out, and his stomach was slit before he was thrown down.” The third woman, 41-year-old Shu, claimed that “CCTV footage was deliberately destroyed and that powerful people were behind it, while Yu’s mother and sister were being pressured.”
Beijing police reported that during interrogation, these three women admitted to deliberately spreading these rumors.
Police stated that their false stories and edited videos created confusion on online platforms and harmed social order. The notice also stated that the investigation into Yu’s death included a scene inspection, forensic tests, CCTV footage, and witness statements. All of this concluded that the death was accidental. Police also provided the family with all the details of the investigation. Officials reiterated that no criminal suspicions are involved in the case.
