A major tragedy struck actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday, September 27. According to reports, a stampede killed at least 38 people, including eight children, and injured more than 46 others. A video viral on social media showed Vijay making an announcement on a microphone, reporting the disappearance of a nine-year-old girl and appealing to police and activists for help. The crowd was so large that people were unable to move. Police stated that only 10,000 people were permitted for the rally, but over 50,000 people packed the 120,000-square-foot venue. Vijay arrived nearly six hours late, leading to a growing impatience and the situation spiraling out of control. Despite all efforts to control the crowd, a stampede broke out, crushing several people.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin immediately held a high-level meeting and arrived in Karur late at night. He visited the hospital to pay tribute to the deceased and meet the injured. The Central Home Ministry has also requested a report from the state government on the incident. The entire state is filled with grief and anger.

While Vijay did not meet with the families of the victims after the accident, he issued a statement on social media. He wrote,“My heart is shattered; I am writhing in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow that words cannot express. I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for the swift recovery of those receiving treatment in the hospital.”
Meanwhile, the DMK accused Vijay of deliberately arriving late to make the crowd appear larger and present himself as an alternative to the DMK and AIADMK. This incident has further heated up the political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
