Oscar-selected film Santosh finally gets release date in India after months-long censorship battle

The Hindi film Santosh, which was Britain’s official Oscar entry last year, is finally set to be released in India. After nearly a year of censorship and certification issues, the film will be released on the digital platform Lionsgate Play. The film premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and received rave reviews abroad, but was denied theatrical release in India. A cast member said, “A beautifully written story, depicted truthfully, holding up a mirror to us of the world we live in, that we have all helped create. Sandhya Suri, the writer and director, has crafted something so meaningful and touching. The film has been shown all over the world, starting its journey at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, and has been greatly appreciated by critics and the public alike. You will see her in a completely new avatar. I cannot wait for everyone in India to finally be able to watch the film.”

What is the story of Oscar-selected film Santosh?

Santosh tells the story of a young widow who inherits her deceased husband’s police job. Initially, this position seems merely symbolic, but circumstances change when she is assigned to investigate the rape and murder of a Dalit teenager.

When will Oscar-selected film Santosh be released in India?

The film’s release was delayed due to strong objections from the CBFC (Censor Board). The film was initially scheduled for release in late 2024 and then early 2025, but the Censor Board demanded numerous cuts. Actress Sunita Rajwar told PTI, “We all want the audience should at least get to see it (the film) and see what we’ve done in it. It is banned. They (makers) are trying, but they (censor board) are asking for so much edit that it’s not possible.” The film is directed by Sandhya Suri and produced by Good Chaos, CineFrance Studios, and MetFilm Productions. Although it reached the longlist for the 2025 Oscars, it failed to receive a nomination.
