Kantara: Chapter 1’s success has turned into a nationwide celebration, with audiences still filling up the theatres weeks after its release. Following this incredible run, the makers have now officially teased the film’s upcoming OTT release, hinting that the wait for its digital premiere might soon be over. But the fans are divided about the announcement.

The film is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video, which has recently released a new poster of the movie featuring Rishab Shetty. While the OTT platform hasn’t confirmed the date yet, industry buzz hints that the digital release announcement is just around the corner.

Fans, however, appear divided, while some are eager to relive the cinematic experience at home, others feel the film should have a longer theatrical run, given its strong box-office hold.
Kantara: Chapter 1 Box Office success
Kantara: Chapter 1 is officially 2025’s highest-grossing Indian movie, earning over Rs 800 crore worldwide. According to Hombale Films, the movie grossed Rs 809 crore globally, surpassing Chhaava’s lifetime total (Rs 807 crore) by Rs 2 crore. However, trade tracker Sacnilk has reported a lower figure of around Rs 775 crore, pointing to a minor difference in reported numbers. Regardless, both figures made Kantara Chapter 1 a record-smashing success. But it also decides if the movie took the top spot from Chhaava or not. In its first two weeks alone, the film earned Rs 717 crore worldwide, with another Rs 92 crore added in its third week. In India, it has collected an impressive Rs 563.50 crore net.

The overseas response has been equally strong, with collections of approximately 13 million USD, proving that the movie’s demand extends far beyond India. An English-language version of the film is expected to be released later this month. Kantara: Chapter 1 is the prequel of the 2022 hit Kantara. It dives into the roots of the Daiva Kola or Bhuta Kola tradition, a spiritual practice deeply embedded in the Tulu culture of coastal Karnataka. Set in pre-colonial India, the film follows Berme, a tribal leader (played by Rishab Shetty), who stands up against the oppressive aristocracy to defend the dignity and beliefs of his people. The movie stars Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Jayaram, and Pramodh Shetty in key roles, with music composed by Ajaneesh Loknath.
