Zarine Khan, wife of actor-filmmaker Sanjay Khan and mother of Sussanne Khan and Zayed Khan, has passed away at the age of 81. She was also the former mother-in-law of actor Hrithik Roshan, but even after their divorce, she always maintained a loving and respectful relationship with Hrithik. Zarine often said that Hrithik would always be like a son to her. Sussanne and Hrithik were married for 14 years, and even though they later decided to separate, Zarine always praised him and maintained the strength of the family.

Zarine Khan revealed in an interview that when Sussanne was very young and had two protruding front teeth, Hrithik told his friends that this girl would be his wife. At that time, Hrithik stuttered and never imagined he would one day become such a big star. Sussanne supported him greatly during the early days of his career. Zarine said, “When Sussanne was at her ugliest worst with her two front teeth protruding, a young Duggu (Hrithik Roshan) had told his friends, ‘She’s the girl I’ll marry’. He’s been with Sussanne from the days he had a stutter and never imagined being a star. She was the one who pushed him and guided him, they’ve grown together.” She also revealed that when Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was about to be released, Sussanne had vowed to give up sweets for Hrithik’s success. After the film’s success, Hrithik kept his promise and married Sussanne. Zarine always believed that their relationship would never end, but after a few years, they divorced by mutual consent. “When Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, had not released, Sussanne pledged a vow of abstaining from sweets for Hrithik’s success. Hrithik honoured his commitment to her and married her soon after the release,” Zarine shared.
Zarine always admired Hrithik’s calm and composed nature. “I think he is in the wrong profession. His heart is so gentle. He is so human and forgiving. He would have made a great spiritual leader. He never holds a grudge, never gets angry. Only extreme injustice against someone can make him really angry.” She further said that Hrithik has an amazing power of forgiveness and maintains peace in every situation.

Sussanne and Hrithik, even after their divorce, are still raising their children, Hridhaan and Hrehaan, together. The two families have maintained a good rapport throughout. When Zarine’s cookbook was released in 2015, Hrithik publicly congratulated her and even referred to her as mom. Zarine commented, “He’s the grandfather of my grandchildren, and our relationship is forever.” She added that Sussanne was very cooperative during their divorce and that the family was always together. Even in 2024, Zarine mentioned to ETimes, “He still is my son. He and Sussanne are not together, but they are the best of friends, and they take care of each other.” A decade has passed, but Hrithik and Sussanne have not remarried—Hrithik is now dating actress Saba Azad, and Sussanne is seeing actor Arslan Goni.
