The plot of the movie is taken from the real life and legal battle of Shah Bano Begum. The case of Shah Bano in the Supreme Court in 1985 marked a turning point in the history of India. The ruling in that specific case stated that divorced women from the Muslim community would be entitled to maintenance as per Section 125 (CrPC) of the Indian Penal Code. This ruling generated a lot of debates nationwide and became a pivotal issue in the discourse on women’s rights, religious identity, and equality. A petition was lodged by Shah Bano Begum’s daughter in the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking a prohibition on the release of the movie
