More than 45 years after the film’s first release, the original climax of Sholay has come to light; censorship regulations at the time were the cause for this change. The famous ending of Sholay was considerably more brutal than what was seen on film, according to Farhan Akhtar, the son of co-writer Javed Akhtar.
Sanjeev Kumar’s character Thakur was supposed to murder Gabbar Singh by trampling on him with his boots. Years later, during the Emergency era in 1975, the censors thought that the original ending was “too violent,” so they rewrote it to a more subdued conclusion in which Gabbar was taken into custody.
Why was the original climax changed?
According to Farhan Akhtar, the writers, Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, were compelled to comply with the demands of the authorities and censors. They contended that the film’s emotional core was the vengeance narrative, in which the handicapped Thakur, in grief, smashed Gabbar’s heart with his spikes on his shoes.
He continued by saying that the writers “had no choice” even though they thought the new conclusion didn’t make full narrative sense, particularly with the people and the police present in the last moments. Ramesh Sippy, the filmmaker, later said in interviews that he had shot the more dramatic conclusion, but he was compelled to comply with the censor board’s directives.
