Nicholas Hoult & Daisy Edgar-Jones Star In Disney+ Series ‘Mosquito’

EXCLUSIVE: In a star pairing of two top English actors of their generation, Nicholas Hoult (Superman) and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters) are set as the leads of Mosquito, a Hulu original series from Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara (Poor Things), which has received a six-episode straight-to-series order. Part of Disney+‘s UK original slate, the dark, wry comedy will stream on Disney+ internationally and Hulu in the U.S.

Described as a sardonic look at a young couple’s relationship, Mosquito brings Hoult, Edgar-Jones and McNamara back to Hulu where they were part of two signature 2020 series. McNamara created and Hoult starred in the comedy-drama The Great, which ran for three seasons, while Edgar-Jones starred in the limited series Normal People. Both shows were hits with viewers and critics, landing Golden Globe acting nominations for Hoult and Edgar-Jones and Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy for McNamara. (Hoult and McNamara, along with female lead Elle Fanning, also earned Emmy nominations for their work on The Great.)

Mosquito channels the dark, absurdist humor of The Great — as well as McNamara’s film work — while exploring the next stage in a young couple’s relationship which Normal People fans wished to see Marianne (Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) embark on.

The series centers on Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Ed (Hoult), a recently married couple whose secrets begin to reveal as daily life chips away at the personas they present… all started by an intrusive mosquito.

“I’m thrilled and excited to work with and team up two of the best actors around,” said Mosquito writer and executive producer McNamara. “I can’t wait to go make absurd comedy with them.”

The series is produced by 20th Television, Piggy Ate Roast Beef Productions and Hustle & Punch. McNamara executive produces with Hoult, Edgar-Jones, Marian Macgowan, former ABC Signature president-turned-producer Tracy Underwood under her 20th TV overall deal, and Daniel Pipski. The series was commissioned for Disney+ by Lee Mason, Disney EMEA executive director. Filming begins in 2026.

This marks the first major UK series greenlight since Eric Schrier, President, Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy, The Walt Disney Co., appointed Angela Jain as Head of Content, Disney+ EMEA in June.

“Tony is one of the most talented writers working in film and television today, with a legacy of incredible success at Disney,” Schrier and Jain said in a joint statement.

All of McNamara’s projects released over the past seven years have been for Disney entities: The Great for Hulu on the TV side and movies The Favourite, Poor Things and The Roses for Searchlight and Cruella for Walt Disney Pictures. His collaborations with Yorgos Lanthimos on The Favourite and Poor Things earned McNamara two writing Oscar nominations and a BAFTA award.

“He has an unmatched ability to bring fascinating and complex stories to life weaving sharply written, intricate dialogue with signature dark-humor and complexity,” Schrier and Jain continued. “Partnering with him on Mosquito is an incredible step forward for our local original content and reinforces our ambitions in the UK.”

Disney+’s UK originals slate delivered a breakout hit in Rivals, which last week won the International Emmy for drama series. It is expected to return for Season 2 in 2026.

Edgar-Jones has three high-profile movies coming up, Sense and Sensibility, A Place In Hell with Michelle Williams and Here Comes the Flood with Denzel Washington and Robert Pattinson. She is repped by UTA, B-Side Management and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

Coming off Superman and Nosferatu, Hoult will next be seen in How To Rob a Bank opposite Anna Sawai, Pete Davidson and Zoë Kravitz. He is repped by UTA, 42 and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.

Australian-born McNamara is repped by UTA, Sugar23, HLA Management and Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Selz.
